Morphological Characterization of Plant, Leaf and Spine of Jara Lemon (citrus Medica) Germplasm

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Sylhet region is a rich centre for different citrus germplasm. In this point of view three jara lemon germplasm viz. Guti Jara, Gol Jara and Pani Jara were characterized morphologically. Among the studied germplasm a wide variability was observed in different characters. Plant, leaf, flower and fruit characters also differed significantly. The tree shape of Guti Jara and Pani Jara was obloid with dense branches of narrow angle and Gol Jara was spheroid with medium branches density having medium branch angle. Shoot tip colour of Guti Jara was straight, Gol Jara was greenish purple and Pani Jara exhibited greenish yellow colour. The leaf blade of Guti Jara was dark green and in Gol Jara and Pani Jara were medium green. Irrespective of germplasm the spine density was medium having 16-40 mm spine length. Spine shape of Gol Jara was obloid and, Gol Jara and Pani Jara were straight. Leaf lamina length ranged from 130 (Guti Jara) to 160 mm (Gol Jara). Leaf apex of Guti Jara, Gol Jara and Pani Jara was obtuse, Rounded and Acuminate, respectively with absence of petiole wing.

Objectives:

Methodology:

Morphological characterization through plant, leaf and spine of three germplasm were conducted at the Citrus Research Station, BARI, Jaintapur, Sylhet and farmers’ orchard of Fatehpur, Haripur, Sylhet during 2012-13. Three jara lemon germplasm viz. Guti Jara, Gol Jara and Pani Jara were included in this study and characterized. Characterization was done following the descriptor published by IPGRI. According to IPGRI descriptor different plant, branch, spine, shoot, leaf, leaf blade, lamina, petiole and petiole wings.

Achievement/Findings:

In respect of plant, branch, spine, shoot, leaf, leaf blade, lamina, petiole, petiole wings, calyx and pedicel characters studied jara lemon showed a wide variations. Therefore, it can be concluded that those germplasm are distinct GI crop of Bangladesh.
