Genotypic and Phenotypic Correlation and Path Analysis in Spring Wheat

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Phenotypic correlation study in spring wheat ( Triticum aestivum L. ) indicated that yield/plant was positively correlated with plant height, spikes/plant, length of spike and grains/spike. The genotypic correlation co-efficient of these characters with yield were high except that of spikes/plant. Hundred grain weight had a phenotypic non-significant correlation co efficient between them was high and positive. Path analysis suggested that length of spike, grains /spike and 100-grain weight were related to yield through their direct effects. Plant height contributed to the yield indirectly via length of spike and grains/spikes/plant was related to yield through grains/spike.

Objectives:

To study the relationships between yield and its component characters of spring wheat

Methodology:

The experimental materials were consisted of 10 varieties of spring wheat and their 45 F₁ hybrids obtained from a half diallel cross. The parental varieties were Nobre, Indus 66, Balaka, Sonalika, Lyallpur, Girua, Sonora 64, Pitic 62, MS 1 and Carazinho. The crop was raised at Bangladesh Agricultural University Farm, Mymensingh, in the winter of 1982-83. The experiment was set in single row plots of 1 metre in length following a randomized block design with three replications. The spacings were 3) between rows and 5 cm within plants of the same row. Data were collected on plant height,spikes/plant, length of spike, grains/spike, 100 grain weight and grain yield/plant from 10 randomly selected plants of each plot. The data were analysed for genotypic and phenotypic correlation.
