Yield Performance of Lentil Genotypes Under Salinity

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A pot experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh during 5 November 2006 to 24 February 2007 to assess yield performance of lentil genotypes under salinity and to find out salt tolerant genotype. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Five genotypes of lentil namely E₄M-934, N₂M-214, E₄M-606, N₁M-134 and Binamasur-3 were grown in pot under 6 dSm^-lsalinity at pre-flowering, flowering and pod formation stages along with a control where no salt was added. Control plants produced maximum plant height, number of primary, and secondary branches plant^-l, stem, leaf, and pod dry weight plant^-l, number of pods, seeds and seed yield plant^-l. Salinity at pod formation stage produced maximum root dry weight. Salinity at pre-flowering stage decreased plant height, number of primary and secondary branch plant^-l, root, stem and pod dry weight plant^-l, number of pods, seeds and seed yield plant^-l compared to control. Among the genotypes, Binamasur-3 produced maximum number of primary and secondary branches plant^-l, root, stem, pod, and total dry matter plant^-l at maturity, number of pods, seeds and seed yield plant^-l. So, Binamasur-3 showed better performance under salinity compared to other genotypes.

Objectives:

To assess the effect of salinity on morpho-physiological and yield attributes of lentil genotypes.
To find out relative salt tolerant genotype.

Methodology:

A pot experiment was conducted lentil at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh during the period from 5 November 2006 to 24 February 2007. Five genotypes of lentil namely E₄M-934, N₂M-214, E₄M-606, N₁M-134 and Binamasur-3 were grown in pot under 6 dSm^-l salinity at pre-flowering, flowering and pod formation stages along with a control where no salt was added. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Each pot contained 7.5 kg of soil collected from BINA farm. Urea, TSP, MP were applied at the rate of 35, 80 and 80 kg ha^-1respectively. Seeds of lentil genotypes were sown on 5 November 2006. Data on morpho-physiological, yield attributes and yield were recorded. The collected data were analyzed statistically following two factor experiment in RCBD with the help of MSTAT computer packages (Russell, 1986). The mean values of the treatments were adjudged by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).

Achievement/Findings:
