Shortening Field Duration of Rice by Seedling Age and Nps Fertilization

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was conducted during boro season 1985-86 for curtailing field duration of rice by manipulating seedling age and NPS fertilization. It was observed that 60 day old seedling and fertilization with 80 kg N +60 kg P₂ 0₅ +30 kg S/ha reduced field duration significantly over lower age and without S fertilization, respectively. Higher doses of N (60 to 80 kg/ha) and P (45 to 60 kg/ha ) showed a similar effect but did not affect significantly. The application of S irrespective of seedling age had a distinct effect on grain yield. Higher or lower doses of NP did not show such an effect. Low level of NP with or without S increased number of spikelets and grains/panicle.

Objectives:

To curtail field duration without disturbinq grain yield of boro rice by optimizing seedling age and NPS fertilization

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the the Agronomy Field Laboratory , BAU, Bangladesh. during boro season, 1985-86. The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design with four replications using four NPS fertilization levels (F₁ = 80 kg N + 60kg P₂O₅/ha, F₂ = 80 kg N + 60 kg P₂0₅ + 30 kg S/ha. F₃=6O kg N+45 kg P₂0₅/ha F₄= 60 kg N+ 45 kg P₂0₅ + 30 kg S/ha) in the main plots and three seedling ages (A₁ = 60 days A₂ = 45 days, A₃ = 30 days in the sub-plots of 2.5 x 2m². One-third N as urea and full amount of P₂O₅ as triple super phosphate and S as gypsum were applied at the time of land preparation. The remaining portion of N was top dressed as urea at 25 and 45 days after transplanting. A blanket dose of 45 kg K₂O was applied at the time of land preparation. 'BAU 63', a recommended modern long duration boro rice variety. was used in the experiment. Seeds were sown in the seed beds on 20 December, 1985. and 5 and 20 January, 1986. Seedlings were raised under polythelene cover to have a good quality seedlings by protecting them from cool temperature. Seedlings were transplanted on 19 February, 1986 and the plots were harvested at maturity from 7 to 18 June. 1986. Data were collected on field duration, yield and yield components. Five hills from each plot were randomly selected for recording individual plant parameters. Grain and straw yields were measured from the whole plot harvest. The moisture content of grain was determined and that of straw was recorded by drying samples in an oven at 72°C for 48 hours. The data for each character were statistically analyzed and the mean values were compared.

Achievement/Findings:

The field duration was found reduced with the increase in the age of seedling and the same was significant indicating that the field duration may be curtailed through the increase in seedling age.
