Effect of Water Stress on Morpho Physiological and Yield Attributes of Boro Rice Genotypes

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A pot experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh, during l5 January to 4 May 2005 to evaluate four boro rice genotypes under soil moisture stress (40% FC) at tillering and booting stages. Rice genotypes viz., BRRI dhan28, Y-1281, RM-250-133 and RD-25-86 were included in this study. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Total chlorophyll, chlorophyll-a, chlorophyll a/b ratio, root weight, stem weight, leaf weight, total dry matter hill^-l and leaf water potential at booting stage decreased with stress compared to control. Grain dry weight increased from fertilization to 18 days thereafter it did not increase significantly. Plant height decreased with the stress both at tillering and booting stage but grain yield and total dry matter hill^-l at maturity decreased with the stress at booting stage only. Both the stresses had no significant effect on panicle length, number of panicles hill^-l, 1000-grain weight and harvest index. BRRI dhan28 and Y-1281 showed higher grain yield, dry matter hill^-l under the treatments.

Objectives:

The objectives of the study were to assess the effect of water stress on growth, yield and yield contributing characters of boro rice genotypes and to identify water stress genotype and determination physiological maturity of grain.

Methodology:

A pot experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh, during l5 January to 4 May 2005 to evaluate four boro rice genotypes under soil moisture stress (40% FC) at tillering and booting stages. Rice genotypes viz., BRRI dhan28,Y-1281, RM-250-133andRD-25-86 were included in this study. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Each pot contained 8 kg of soil collected from BINA farm. Urea 1.72 g, TSP 1.44 g. MP 0.80 g, Gypsum 0.11 g and ZnO 0.21 g pot^-1 were applied following 215-180-100-20-4 kg of urea, TSP, MP, Gypsum and ZnO ha^-1 respectively. Forty day old 3 seedlings were transplanted in each puddle pot on 15 January 2005. Data on morpho-physiological, yield attributes and yield were recorded. The collected data were analyzed statistically following two factor experiment in RCBD with the help of MSTAT computer packages (Russell, 1986). The mean values of the treatments were adjudged by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).
