An Evaluation of Application Uniformity of a Low Cost Drip Irrigation Technology

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Application uniformity of emitter flows of a low cost drip irrigation system has been evaluated through a research study. The findings of the study are presented in this paper. The coefficient of uniformity (CU) computed by Christiansen equation for four experimental drip plots varies from 65% to 76%, while CU computed by another equation varies from 70% to 76%. The distribution uniformity (DU) for the drip plots varies from 59% to 66%. The coefficient of variation (C v) varies from 31 % to 47%, while the coefficient of variation uniformity (C v U) varies from 53% to 69%. The frequency variation in emitter flows does not come under bell-shaped distribution and emitter plugging and/or clogging occurred. The application uniformity comes to be fair and poor as per rating criteria of micro irrigation, still they bear good significance for a low cost drip irrigation technology.

Methodology:

The soil of the experimental field was of filling type and mixed with stones, broken bricks etc. Texturally, the soil was of sandy loam type. Bulk density was 1.38 g/cc. Particle density was 2.55 g/cc. Field capacity of soil was 23.46% by weight basis.The standard deviation (Sd), the average flow (q_a), and the Cv of test data collected for evaluating the application uniformity of micro-irrigation systems can be easily determined by utilizing a scientific calculators or a computer spreadsheet program. In fact, this is usually easier than computing CU or DU. Furthermore, Cv is a generally known and accepted measure of the variation within a set of data. Therefore, the application uniformity of low-cost micro-irrigation systems for small plots may be expressed in terms of the Coefficient of Variation Uniformity (CvU) and computed as follows: CvU = 100(1.0 - v) = 100 - Cv (8) The Coefficient of Variation Uniformity (CvU) as expressed by Eq. (8) is nothing but Statistical Uniformity (SU).

The quality of the low-cost polyethylene material used in the drip line should be improved and modified to achieve high application uniformity. Punching instrument used to make punches in the drip lines should be modified so that holes could be punched with uniform size as well as with larger dimension
