Effects of Nitrogen Application at Different Growth Stages on the Performance of Boro Rice Cv. Iratom24

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted at the Experimental Field of the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh during the boro season of December 1995 ot May 1996 to evaluate the effects of level of nitrogen applied at different growth stages on IRA TOM 24 rice. The experiment comprised four nitrogen levels viz. 30, 60, 90 and 120 kg/ha and four growth stages of nitrogen application viz. seedling, tillering, panicle initiation and anthesis stages, A randomized complete block design was followed for the experiment. The data revealed that N-levels significantly influenced all yield and yield attributes. The rate of 90 kg N/ha gave significantly better performance over the other rates of nitrogen in respect of all the growth characters studied. Application of nitrogen at different growth stages also significantly influenced all the agronomic parameters and the yield. Among the four timings of nitrogen application, the tillering stage appeared to be superior with respect to all yield attributes and yield. Interaction effect of level and time of nitrogen application was also significant in producing the grain yield.

Objectives:

To study the response of the boro rice cv. IRATOM 24 to different rates of fertilizer nitrogen at different predetermined growth stages.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Experimental Field of the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh during the boro season of December 1995 to May 1996. The site belongs to the agro- ecological region of the Old Brahmaputra Floodplain having non-calcarious dark grey floodplain soil which is sandy loam in nature with pH value of 6.8. The experiment included four levels of N viz. 30 (N₁), 60 (N₂), 90 (N₃) and 120 (N₄) kg/ha and four timings of N application viz. seedling at 15 DAT (days after transplanting, S₁), tillering at 45 DAT (S₂), panicle initiation at 70 DAT (S₃) and anthesis at 95 DA T (S₄) stages. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications having the plot size of 12 m2 (4m x 3m). The plots were fertilized with triple super phosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum and zinc sulphate at the rate of 100, 50, 60 and 10 kg/ha, respectively. These fertilizers were broadcast and incorporated into the soil at the time of final land preparation. Nitrogen fertilizer in the form of urea was applied as top-dressing to the plots as per treatments. The boro rice cv. IRATOM 24 was used in the experiment. The seedlings were raised in the wet nursery bed technique and forty five day old seedlings were transplanted in well prepared soils with 3 or 4 seedlings per hill. Row to row and hill to hill spacing were 25 and 15 cm, respectively. Different intercultural operations such as gap filling, weeding, irrigation and drainage etc. were well operated. To study different growth parameters two hills per plot were uprooted at 15 day intervals beginning from 30 DAT up to 105 DA T. The leaves were collected from each sample and their areas were determined by placing the leaves in an electronic leaf area meter. The components were then dried at 80°C for 48 hours until a constant dry weight obtained. The total plant dry matter was converted to g/m². Crops were harvested at maturity and prior to harvesting five hills per plot were collected randomly to study different yield attributes. Plot-wise grain and straw yields were recorded.

So, based on the results of the present study, it may be concluded that optimum level of nitrogen for the cv. IRATOM 24 under the agro-climatic condition of the experimental area is 90 kg N/ha and the appropriate time of N- application is at the tillering stage.
