Effect of Planting Time on the Production of Banana in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study suggested that the months of September, October and November should get first preference as planting time, followed by 2^nd preference of December, January and February plantings. The 3^rd preference i. e. plantings in March and April - May were depended on the skillful exploitation of summer market. All the suckers planted in the period of 1^stpreference except a few in November set well after planting while certain percentages died in the time of 2^nd preference. Vegetative growth of plant and fruit development was adversely affected in winter. April - May planting took the longest average crop period (415.25 days) followed by March and February while it was shortest in September (329 days). In respect of both bunch weight and fruit size, the September planting of the 1^st preference produced biggest hunch and fruit size (15.06 kg/ bunch and 191.78 g/ fruit) while it was smallest in March planting (9.15 kg/ bunch and 128.85 g/ fruit).

Objectives:

To investigate the effects of planting time on growth, crop period, bunch characters and yield of a leading commercial variety' Amritasagar'.

Methodology:

The research was carried out at the Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during September 1981 to July 1983. There were eight planting times in the study. Monthly plantings were done in the months of September 1981 to March 1982 during 20 to 25^th day and there was one planting in April. May which happened on 30 April and 1 May. Planting in those months have been excluded. The sword sucker of 2.50 ± 0.50 kg and aged 3 months were selected as planting material. Before the selection of suckers, a preliminary study on the sucker development in 'Amritasagar' banana was made. Using the experience, a large number of suckers coming out from middle portion of rhizome were marked when they came out of the ground. Out of these 32 suckers weighing 2.50 ± 0.50 kg were selected for a planting occasion. The experiment was laid out in the randomized complete block design with four replications. The unit plot was 8 x 4 m and the plants were spaced 2 x 2 m. The soil of the experimental plot was silty loam having a pH of 6.6. Fertilizer application and different cultural practices were done in the experimental plot. The observations on the cumulative number of leaves, date of bunch shooting (flowering) were recorded at weekly interval while measurements on final plant height and girth were made at harvest. The height was measured from the upper most level of rhizome to angular point formed by the inner petioles of leaves and the girth was taken at the mid point of this height which represented an average of the girths at base of the pseudostem and at the upper point below the cluster of leaf petioles. The bunches were harvested when the fingers were full (rounded). The data the number of green leaves at harvest, time of harvesting, bunch characteristics and yield were recorded. Crop period was calculated in number of days count, from transplanting to harvesting.

Achievement/Findings:

The results of the present study indicated that September to November plantings were better than any other plantings while September planting proved to be the best considering the time required from planting to harvesting, uniformity of harvesting, size of fruit, yield per unit area, efficient utilization of land etc. The plantings in December, January and February were found to be second better time in respect of yield and market price. But the provision of irrigation during the dry winter months was very essential for initial setting of crop. The lowest crop yield with March and April - May planting might be profitable if high price could be captured only through planned vesting and marketing.
