Food and Feeding Habits of Penaeus Monodon

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Results of the study conducted for a period of 6 months on the food & feeding habits of Penaeus monodon of with respect to types and amount of different feed taken by the Penaeid shrimp, feeding chronology and its seasonal pattens of feeding were studied.The Penaeid shrimp was found to be an omnivore with higher preference for organic debris, algae and higher plants. The plant food found in the stomach were filamentous algae and aquatic higher plants. Small amount of animal foods were also found. The shrimp showed diet variation in its feeding activity with maximum feeding at midnight (2400) and minimum at 1500 hour. The shrimp also showed seasonal variation in its feeding. Maximum feeding was recorded during warm season than the winter season.

Objectives:

To determine the types and amount of food taken, the feeding chronology and the seasonal patterns of feeding of P. monodon (Fabricus).

Methodology:

Collection of the shrimps: The shrimps for the present study were collected from a pond of ''Shrimp culture farm" of Gramin Bank at Ellahchar, Shatkhira with a cast net of 1.2 cm mesh size. To study the types and food and feeding patterns random samplings were made once in every month from June 20 to November 19, 1988. The diet pattern was studied using samples at every three hours beginning at 1200 hours and continued for a period of 74 hours during each sampling time. Immediately after collection the stomach of Penaeid shrimp samples were removed carefully and preserved individually in labelled vials in 5% formalin. At the time of collection, the totaI length in cm and weight in g of each individual were recorded. The water temperature (OF),salinity of water and depth of water body in cm were also recorded during sampling time. Then the samples were brought to the laboratory for further studies. Laboratory studies and stomach analysis: In the laboratory, each stomach was cut open and the contents were carefully taken with the help of a fine needle on a glass slide and the contents were identified under microscope. Various methods were used for the qualitative and quantitative determination of food items ingested by the shrimp, such as numerical, volumetric, gravimeter points and percentage of frequency of occurrence method. Of these, the points method of Hynes ( 1950 ) and percentage of frequency occurrence method were used in the present study. Hynes (1950) reviewed all the methods used in the studies of the food of samples and concluded that the points method was by far the most satisfactory one.

Out of eight different food groups organic debris was found to be the most dominant and important group by percentage of total points per shrimp.
