Extent of Enterprises Integration of Selected Farms in Mymensingh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Farms are multi-enterprise entrepreneurs. A study of their extent and level of integration between enterprises reveals that the farm resources are optimally allocated into different production enterprises. Cattle raising is integrated in the farming process in such way that both animal and crop husbandry complements each other. The scale of operations of livestock crop enterprises is attained by their level of complementarity to each other.

Objectives:

To find and analyze thoroughly the level and extent of integration between production enterprises of the representative farms in an area of Mymensingh district.

Methodology:

Ten farms were selected randomly from a list of farmers operating 2 to 5 acres of land from a village of Gouripur Upozila under the district of Mvmensingh. The range of holding size was chosen on the considerations that most farms cluster within this size range. Farm families within this range have been found to pursue farm activities intensively and have more agricultural investments than other size groups of farms. Data collected refer to the year 1985. Family budgets giving Income and expenditure information by sources was worked out for each of the sample farms. To see the level and extent of enterprises integration. the sample farms were thoroughly investigated. Data were collected through survey method with structured questionnaires. Crop production and cattle raising are the overwhelming farming practices in the area and therefore, livestock-crop crop livestock production integration, have been analyzed For computation of cost of production per acre, cost of service of fixed inputs and all variable expenses were estimated. Service flows of the fixed inputs were Imputed in terms of value. For owned fixed inputs (e. g., famiIy labour, draft animal. etc. ) service flow employed in particular operation was valued in terms of opportunity cost at market prices. The area of the farms selected has no natural water sources for surface irrigation faclities except a few ponds, Many of which are derelict. There is a deep tubewell for irrigation during Boro/Aus season. Twenty three percent of the operated land of the selected farms fall within the command area of deep tubewell irrigation. The area of the selected farms is flood free. An inter district highway and several wide kutcha roads pass through the village connecting some important market places. The farms have good market linkages in the area.

Achievement/Findings:

Livestock/crop integration adopted by the farmers was not market oriented. However farmers may be encouraged for investments on both crop and livestock enterprises on the plea that the rate of returns from the two enterprises are equal and they have integration through complementarity.
