Inconveniences in Rice Cultivation as Perceived by Small Farmers

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The extent of obstacles in rice cultivation due to various inconveniences faced by the small farmers were studied. Data were collected from a sample of 205 small farmers in an area of Bangladesh. The farmers have experienced the greatest inconveniences in plant protection, followed by irrigation and high yielding varieties. Non-adopters of HYVs faced inconveniences in plant protection more than the adopters. On the whole,the extent of rice cultivation obstacles were higher among the non-adopters of HYVs than the other categories of farmers.

To determine the problems face by the small farmers during rice production

Methodology:

The population for this study was 1619 small farmers included within 18 villages under the Agri- Varsity Extension Project (AEP) of the Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh. However, data were collected from a sample 205 small farmers. An obstacle score for small farmers on each of the five aspects of rice cultivation was measured by using scales. The scale contained ten probable in conveniences which the small farmers might face in respect of five aspects of rice cultivation. Each small farmer was asked to indicate the extent of obstacle caused by each of the inconveniences by checking any of the five responses very much, much, some, little, and not at all,and weights assigned to these responses were 4, 3, 2, 1 and 0 respectively. Weights for responses against all these were added together to obtain his obstacle score in each of the five aspects. Therefore, the scores of the respondents could range from 0 to 40 in each aspect, 0 indicating no obstacle and 40 very high obstacles. This was expressed in percent. Thus the possible range of obstacle scores in each of the five aspects of rice cultivation would be from 0 to 100.

Achievement/Findings:

It appear to be those small farmers who are prepared; for whatever reason, to grow HYVs, but not to any great extent, and who app ear to have given the decision some what less thought than the high adopters. Nevertheless, it is of significance that the non-adopters have taken their decisions consciously. Experience may well lead them to use HYVs to a great extent.
