Effect of Fungicides on of Alternaria Blight Yield and Seed Quality of Mustard

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Efficacy of seven fungicides at three doses in reducing foliage disease intensity and seed infestation of mustard by Altemsrie brassicae was evaluated in field conditions in two consecutive cropping seasons (1983-84-85). Five sprays of fungicides were applied with first spray at 40 days growth stage maintaining an interval of 8 days. Dithane M-45 proved to be the best fungicide. The effects on deformation and discoloration and yield of mustard were not significant. In Dithane M-45 treated plots, Ieaf spot severity' and siliqua spotting were reduced by 73 and 72% respectively and an increase of 30% seed yield was found over control.

Objectives:

To screen mere fungicides, determine doses and their effects on the development of Alternaria blight, and seed quality in respect of deformation and discolouration and yield of mustard.

Methodology:

The strains YS-52 of mustard ( Bra- ssica campestris L.) susceptible to Alternaria blight ( Alternaria brassicae (Berk.) Sacc.) was used in this experiment. Seven fungicides in two consecutive cropping seasons of 1983-84 and 1984-85 were used. In the first cropping season, Dithane M-45 (Co- ordinate compound of Zinc ion and Manqnous ethylene bisdithiocarba- mate), Thiovit (bis (dimethylthio- carbamoyl) disulphlle ), Delan (dithianon (2, 3-dicarbonitrile-1, 4- dithia- anthraquinone) and Topsin M (Dimethyl 4, 4-0-phenyleneleis (3-thioallo- phanate) were used. Due to poor performances of Thiovit and Topsin they were excluded from the second year study and new fungicides, Trimil- tox Forte (Combination of mancozeb and copper oxychloride), Macuprex ( Combination of pre-reacted Bordeaux mixture) and Cupravit (50% copper exvchloride ) were included. tach of the fungicides was used at 3 (three) different doses. The experiments were conducted at Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA) Farm, Mymensingh in split-plot design with doses in the main plot and fungicides in the sub-plot. The unit plot size was 2.0 x 1.5m with spacing of 25 x 10 cm between rows and plants respectively. Fertilizers and irrigation were given as recommended, To protect the crop from aphids, Dimecron was sprayed thrice before and after flowering. Fungicides were sprayed five times at 8 days interval with the first spray done at 40 days after sprouting. One Iitre solution of the fungicide was sprayed in 12 m² area. The untreated plots were sprayed with plain water. Eight parameters were recorded during the study. Ten plants of middle five rows in each unit plot were randomly selected for all observations. Observations for the first three parameters were made in the standing crop at 10 days after the Iast spray.

Achievement/Findings:

Based on stated findings and above discussion, it may be concluded that use of Dithane M-45 for 5 times at a very low dose (O.3%) significant reduction of alternaria blight infestation in the field and increase yield of apparently healthy seeds and overall yield of mustard could be achieved.
