Genetic Study of Soybean Genotypes Using Inoculation and Growth Regulator

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Twenty eight soybean genotypes were studied in a field experiment during 1984, with inoculation and growth regulator (NAA) on nodulation and some plant characters. Seed inoculation by Rhizobium jsponicum G1-13 increased number of nodules; nodule drymatter weight, plant drymatter, height and number of pods per plant fo r most of the genotypes. The plant growth regulator, had no significant effect on characters studied. Variances for genotype -inoculum-hormone interaction were quite substantial for most of the characters. A high heritability estimate (93%) was obtained in plant height which was recorded at or after flowering. The highest expected genetic advance was 74% for number of pods/plant.

Objectives:

To investigate the responses of some soybean genotypes to inoculation and a growth regulator.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the experimental Farm of the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from January to May, 1984. The experimental area belongs to the non-calcareous Brahmaputra Alluvium Soil Tract of Bangladesh. The land was selected where soybeans were not cultivated before and the previous crop was paddy. Twenty eight soybean genotypes were included in this study. The seeds were inoculated with the Rhizobium japoni- cum G 1-13 which was locally produced. The Plant growth hormone C-napthe- lene acetic acid or NAA was used in this study as a foliar spray. It is commercially designated as planofix (May and Ba ker). The land was prepared properly and fertilizers were mixed with .the soil at the rate of 60 and 20 Kg/ha TSP and Muriate of potash before final preparation of land. Seeds were sown on January 13, 1984. Row to row spacing was 30 cm and plant to plant 5 cm. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with/three replications. Inoculum was applied once with seeds immediately before sowing only. The NAA was applied twice at a concentration of 10. ppm, The first spray of NAA was done after 58 days of sowing and the second one 3 weeks after the 1st application. Hormone application was completed before flower initiation of any genotype. Intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Data on 15 randomly selected plants were recorded from each genotype. The mean data from the selected plants per treatment were used for statistical analysis.

Achievement/Findings:

Highly significant variation was observed between control.and inoculated treatments for plant height at different stages. The phenotypic co- efficient of variation was greater than the genotypic co-efficient of variation for all of the traits, as expected. Heritability was highest in plant height (b) (93%) and moderate in number of nodules and nodules dry matter per plant (55.58%).
