Mathematical Modeling for Optimization of Land and Water Resources in Irrigation Project

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This paper presents the result of a study carried out to optimize land and water resources of an irrigation project. Linear optimization technique used for model formulation and optimal crop planning. Results indicated that, the output from the same command area with available water could be increased significantly by mathematical modeling where cultivable land and usable water are scarce resources. Study revealed that variable irrigation level indicated about 22 per cent higher net return than the fixed irrigation level option and hence variable irrigation found more beneficial. Extensive irrigation indicated opportunity of higher cropping intensity and higher economic return than the intensive irrigation. A single level of irrigation was indicated by the optimal plan for all the crops of the entire command area, i.e., 100 per cent and 70 per cent irrigation level during Kharif and Rabi season respectively, which makes irrigation management comparatively easier.

Objectives:

Optimizing cropping pattern, i.e. allocation of land for different crops to maximize the production from the command area.
Optimal allocation of land and water resources in order to maximize net return from cultivated crops.
Estimating water production function for all the crops grown in the study area and utilize this function to develop a variable irrigation model.

Methodology:

Mathematical model tries to represent the real world problem(s) in sets of mathematical relationships. Visualization of the field problems in the form of mathematical equations may call model formulation. Two forms of models, namely the fixed irrigation model (one level of irrigation, i.e., optimum irrigation) and the variable irrigation model (three levels of irrigation i.e., optimum or 100 per cent and 80 per cent and 70 per cent of the optimum irrigation) formulated for this study. Only the variable irrigation model formulation is discussed to avoid repetition. Linear programming gives results for feasible variables and doesn't give value for the infeasible variables. This limitation does not have any impact on this study, as optimum solution should be on the feasible area. Another limitation of this technique is, it must satisfy all the constraints with equal importance. In reality very rarely all the variables have equal importance. Achievement/Findings:

Simulated results with variable irrigation options indicated higher return than the fixed irrigation options. Therefore, it can be concluded that variable irrigation option is more beneficial than the fixed irrigation option. Extensive irrigation gave the opportunity of higher cropping intensity and higher return.
