A Study on the Effect of Time and Method of Planting on the Yield of Norteno-67 Cultivar of Wheat

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The method of planting, row and broadcast, did not exhibit any significant effect on the characters of wheat studied. The time of planting-If), 20, 30 November and 10 December significantly influenced all the crop characters studied except the weight of 1000 grains. Late November to early December appeared to be the suitable time for planting of Norteno-67 cultivar of wheat.

Objectives:

To determine the most suitable time and method of planting for cultivar.

Methodology:

A trial with Norteno-67, a promising Mexican cultivar of wheat was conducted at the Bangladesh Agricultural University Farm, Mymensingh, during the period from November 1970 to April 1971. The soil of the experimental plots was sandy loam with a pH value of 6. 8. The crop was grown under irrigated condition. Planting of seeds was done on (a) 10 November, (b) 20 November, (c) 30 November, and (d) 10 December in two methods of planting-row sowing and bro- adcast sowing. In the case of row sowing a within-row distance of 10 inches was maintained. The seed rate per acre for all the treatments under study was constant The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design assigning the time of planting in the main plots and the method of planting in the unit plots. The size of each unit plot was 1/889. 20 ha. The land was fertilized with 83. 84 kg ofN, 77. 78 kg ofP~05 and 39•15 kg of K!I 0 per ha. in the forms of urea, triple superphosphate and muriate of potash, respectively. Whole of P, 0 5 and K.O and one-third of N were applied at the final preparation of the land. The rest two thirds of N was top dressed in two eq ual installments after 30 and 60 days of sowing. The crop was irrigated thrice-25, 58, and 80 days after seeding. Three hand weddings were done after 15, 40, and 60 days of seeding. At the very early stage, the crop was attacked by cut worm ( Agrotis ypsilon) which was con- trolled by spraying malathion at the rate of 0.5 kg per ha.
