A Study of the Production of Combustible Gas from Organic Wastes

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Efforts to produce combustible gas out of organic refuses was successful: both in pilot and in semi commercial scales. The design of the plant was made to suit the local and soil physical condition. A family- consisting of 5-6 members would require a plant of 100 cfr. gas storage capacity to fulfil its fuel requirements for cooking and lighting. organic wastes and water Were mixed at the ratio 1; 1 to give charge to the plant. An inoculum of Methallobaclerium sp, and a calcic activator were required to initiate and accelerate the fer, mentation reaction. Fresh material was fed into the fermenter every day at the rate of 32th of the first charge. The production of the gas depends on the quality of wastes being used. It was observed that the temperature of the day has a direct bearing on the rate of production of the gas. The gas was also used to burn through Bun- sen burners. Besides, this would provide a highly sanitary method of their disposal and save the environment from getting polluted..

Objectives:

To study the possibilities of producing combustible gas out of organic refuses.

Methodology:

. Organic wastes principally in the from of cow dung and litter were employed in the experiment, so that it could serve as a homogeneous rather finely bro- ken material to make the fermentation reaction proceed with ease. Other orga- nic wastes such as waste paper was also used along with cow dung and litter. 2. The inoculum consisting of the orgarism of Methanobacterium sp. was prepared by taking suspension from decaying organic matter under the active decomposition of saprophytic organisms. 3. A calcic activator was used to enhance the fermenting activities of the micro- organisms to create conditions for maintaining anaerobic environment and to act as a check against liberating gases having antiphlcgestic or fire-extinguishing properly. 4. A fermentation tank fitted with a gas holder and gas transmission system as well as a stove was designed and made locally to use the produced gas. 5. A gas-light fitted with mantle was obtained from the Bengal Scientific & Technical Works (Private) Ltd. Calcutta, India. The design of the gas plant went through different stages of experimentation and eventually reached the semi- commercial family size design. The plant has two parts : the fermentation tank and the gas holder. The fermentation tank was made of two segments, the lower one being 6 inch e-, less in diameter.
