Evaluation of Burmese Grape (baccaurea Sapida Muell. Arg) Germplasm at Jaintiapur, Sylhet

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Five Burmese grape germplasm were studied at CRS, Jaintapur, Sylhet. A wide variation was observed among the germplasm studied. The highest plant height, base girth, canopy spreading and leaf size were noted from BS Jai-005.Irrespective of germplasm harvesting was done during June-July. Fruit size was found maximum (3.4×3.4 cm) in BS Jai-003 followed by BS Jai-001 (3.3×3.1 cm). The germplasm BS Jai-003 produced the heaviest fruits (14.6 g) while BS Jai-004 produced the lightest (8.6 g). Edible portion was found maximum (47.5%) in BS Jai-001 as compared to minimum (38.6 g) in BS Jai-005. The highest TSS (13.6%) was recorded in BS Jai-001, while the lowest (12.4%) in BS Jai-003. Number of fruits/plant was obtained the highest (4000) from BS Jai-005 compared to the lowest (600) from BS Jai-004. Weight of /fruits plant (38.1 kg) and yield (25.0 t/ha) were recorded the highest from BS Jai- 001 while the lowest (5.2 kg/plant and 6.1 t/ha, respectively) was noted from BS Jai-004. All the germplasm suffered from powdery mildew and shooty mould except BS Jai-001. BS Jai-001 and BS Jai- 003 were free from fruit borer, but chaper beetle was common found in all the germplasm

Objectives:

To study the performance of Burmese grape germplasm at CRS, Jaintapur, Sylhet
To evaluate, characterized and documented the Burmese grape germplasm for future utilization
To select superior Burmese grape germplam in respect to yield and fruit quality for developed as varieties

Methodology:

ely BS Jai-001, BS Jai-002, BS Jai-003, BS Jai-004 and 5 were included in the study. These plants are about 25 years old and bear fruits regularly. At the beginning of the experiment the plants were rejuvenated by pruning of dead and diseased branches, free from parasitic plants, algae and lichen. Therefore, the trunks were painted with Bordeaux paste to avoid fungal infection. The plants were fertilized with 30 kg cow dung, 1 kg urea, 1 kg TSP, 750 g MoP, 200 g gypsum, 50 g zinc sulphate and 20 g boric acid in two equal splits one in the month of July and another in the month of October. The plants were infested by chaper beetle twice in the month of July and September, hence two full cover sprays of Cypermethrin (Cymcare 10 EC @ 1ml/L of water) were applied. Three hand weeding was done throughout the rainy season to avoid losses of soil nutrients by weed and also to destroy the harbor of insect pests. Data on plant height, base girth, plant spreading, growth condition of plants, branching density, harvest duration, leaf size (cm), number of fruits/plant, fruit weight (g), fruit length (cm), fruit breadth (cm), number of segments/fruit, flesh weight (g), edible portion (%), TSS (%), seeds/fruit (no.), rind weight (g), seed weight (g), fruit weight/plant (kg), yield (ton/ha), fruit shape, skin color, flesh color and organoleptic taste were recorded. Fruit quality data were analyzed by MSTAT-C computer programme and DMRT was performed for the interpretation of the results.

Achievement/Findings:

Considering plant health, fruit size, edible portion, TSS, yield as well as disease and insect infestation the accession BS Jai- 001 performed the best among the accession and it has already been evaluated by the evaluation committee for releasing as a variety.
