Major land types recognized were highland (32.7%) and medium highland (36.6%). Major textural classes also identified were clay (34.2%), loam (24.7%) and clay loam (22.0%). Six soil groups were identified namely, Sara, Gopalpur, Ishwardi, Ghior, Batra and Made land. In highland and medium highland Sara, Gopalpur and Ishwardi existed. Suitable crops identified were jute (deshi, tosa), rice (boro, T. aus, B. aus and T. aman), rabi maize, rabi cotton, groundnut, soybean, wheat, cabbage, cauliflower, spinach, red amaranth, rabi chilli, mustard, brinjal (rabi and kharif), mango, jackfruit, coconut, and betel nut. Kaun, potato, onion, garlic, mung bean, muskalai, kharif vegetable, watermelon, pineapple, ginger, turmeric, and banana were identified as moderately suitable. Six major cropping patterns were found e.g. Wheat/Mustard/ Khesari/Lentil/Onion/Garlic-Aus/Til/Jute-T. aman; Potato/Radish/ Beans/Cabbage/Cauliflower/Tomato/Chilli- Brinjal/Snake gourd/ Laddy’s finger/ Chilli; Wheat/Mustard/ Khesari/Lentil/Onion/Garlic-Fallow-T. aman; Wheat/Mustard/ Khesari/Lentil/Onion/Garlic-Aus/Til/Jute/Chilli-Fallow. Boro (Modern)-T. aman (modern). Fertilizer recommendations for suitable crops are given. This guide can be used for determining flood, drought, landslide, soil erosion, river bank erosion. Demonstration site selection for technology transfer and local level development planning can be done with the help of this guide. Upazila land and soil resources carrying capacity can be estimated which would help in determining food deficit or surplus of the area.
