Preparation of Upazila Land and Soil Resource Guide, Melandaha Upazila, Jamalpur

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Melandaha is situated in about the middle of Jamalpur district. It lies between 24º51´ and 25º04´ north latitude and 89º43´ and 89º54´ east longitude and covers an area of 24,000 ha. It lies in the agro-ecological zones of Old Brahmaputra Floodplain (AEZ 9) and Young Brahmaputra and Jamuna Floodplain (AEZ 8). The upazila comprises of 11 unions having a population of 279,342 (2001). Four land types namely highland, medium highland, medium lowland, and low land were identified. The textural classes were sand, sandy loam, loam, clay loam and clay. Ten soil groups were identified. Total 133 soil samples were collected and analyzed. The status of N, K found very low, P, S, B low and Zn medium in AEZ 9 and N very low, P, K, Zn low and S, B medium in AEZ 8 in this upazila. Nine major cropping patterns were found in the upazila. Fertilizer recommendations for suitable crops are given. Well-planned fish culture could be profitable in the larger waterbodies in Durmut, Nangla, Adra, Fulkucha, Jhaugacha unions of this upazila. Irrigated boro in clay soils of Old Brahamaputra Floodplain soils and winter crops like wheat, maize in Young Brahmaputra Floodpalin could be grown successfully. Melandaha upazila was first surveyed in 1991 and updated in 2010.

Objectives:

Methodology:

Field survey was conducted on the basis of semi-detailed soil survey method. Interpretative soil and landform map was prepared using 1:50,000 aerial photographs. Soils were investigated following a catena and composite top soil samples were collected. The sampling frequency were 1 (one) sample per 200 ha. During survey crops, cropping patterns, soil management data were collected by physical observations and interviewing the farmers. Soil samples were analyzed for fertility assessment. Crop suitability for each land type was determined. Fertilizer recommendations for suitable crops were made. Final soil and landform map was made from the interpretative field map through verification by ground truthing and field checks. After compiling physical and chemical data sets the land and soil resource utilization guide was prepared.

Achievement/Findings:

Major land types recognized were medium highland (32.8%), highland (23.7%) and medium lowland (22%). Major textural classes identified loam (50.3%), clay (16.7%) and clay loam (38.9%). Six soil groups identified Sonatala, Melandaha, Dhamrai, Bararchar, Brahmaputra silty alluvium and Brahmaputra sandy alluvium. Suitable crops were rice (T. aus modern and local, T. aman modern and local), jute (deshi, tosa), sugarcane, mustard, soybean, kharif and rabi groundnut, rabi and kharif vegetables, kaun, jab, cheena, cabbage, muskalai, zinger, turmeric, wheat, potato, banana. Major cropping patterns were Boro-F-T.aman (18.61%); Wheat/potato/mustard/maize- aus/ jute-T. aman (10%); Boro-F-F (6%); rabi vegetables (lady’s finger/karala/jhinga/chichinga/patal/data/chalkumra)-Kharif vegetables (5%); etc. Fertilizer recommendations for 50 existing and potential crops of the upazila at high and medium yield goals and for 89 crops at high yield goal are given. This guide can be used for determining flood, drought, landslide, soil erosion, river bank erosion. Demonstration site selection for technology transfer can be done with the help of this guide. Upazila land and soil resource's carrying capacity can be estimated which would help in determining food deficit or surplus of the area.
