Correlation and Path Analysis in Wheat (triticum Aestivum L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study on character association and relative contribution of different characters on grain yield in wheat was conducted using seven parental genotypes with F₂ and F₃ populations of five crosses involving these parents. Grain yield/plant had a negative correlation with days to heading and number of productive tilers/plant, and with 100-grain weight it had a positive correlation. Path coefficient analysis showed that days to heading had a very high direct negative effect on grain yield, while number of productive tillers/plant and 100-grain weight had a high direct positive effect. The indirect effect of number of productive tillers/plant through days to heading was negative and very high, while the indirect effect of 100-grain weight through days to heading was positive and high on grain yield.

Objectives:

To estimate the correlation between grain yield and yield components as well as to estimate the direct and indirect contribution of different yield components on grain yield in wheat.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Experimental farm of Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during 1980-81 with seven wheat genotypes viz. Mexipak 65, Sonalika. Inia-66, Timson, Timgalen, Halbard and WW -15, and F₂ and F₃ generations of five crosses involving the parents. The sowing date was 3rd December 1980. The design of the experiment was a randomized block with three replications. The spacing were 25cm between rows and 15 cm between plants within the row. Twenty plants were grown in each line. There were 14 (7x2) lines of seven parents. 75 (15x5) lines of F₂ and 50 (10x5) lines of Fa plants of five crosses in each replication. Ten plants of each of the parents and 50 plants of each of the F₂ and F₃ of each of the crosses were randomly selected from each replication for the study, Data on days to heading, plant height (cm), number of productive tillers/plant, ear length (cm), 1000 grain weight (g) and grain yield (g)/plant were recorded. Correlation coefficients between different characters were estimated following standard formula (Hayes et. al.1955). The coefficient of path analysis was obtained by solution of simultaneous equation as reports d by Dewey and Lu (1959).

Achievement/Findings:

The results indicate that early heading materials could produce heavier grain and result into high grain yield/ plant. This could be due to the longer grain filling period offered by the early heading materials. The correlation and path coefficient analysis results revealed that 100-grain weight, early heading, limited number of productive tillers/plant and ear length are the major contributors to grain yield in the wheat materials studied. Since the study was conducted in widely spaced plant population, the conclusion may hold true in similar planting condition.
