Observation on the Changes in Behaviour of Murrah Buffalo Heifers During Estrus

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Fifteen buffalo-heifers were studied for the changes developing in their behavior and external genitalia during estrus period. The appetite of all the heifers was observed to remain unaffected during the period. Bellowing was observed in 66:7% of the heifers when kept in group. Seventy three percent of the heifers allowed other heifers to sniff and lick their external genitalia. Mounting was noted in 33.4% of the heifers. Eighty five percent of the heifers were observed to accept the mile during estrus. The position of the tail was found to be elevated and deviated laterally in 13.4% and 6.6% of the heifers respectively. Vulvar lips were noted to be hot; edematous and wrinkled in 26.7% and similar symptoms without wrinkles on vulva were recorded in 73.3% of the heifers. Vaginal discharge of variable nature was recorded in 66.7% of the heifers.

Objectives:

To gain comprehensive information on the subject of changes in behavior of buffaloes during estrus.

Methodology:

A total number of 15 Murrah buffalo heifers from 3 to 4 years of age- were examined at the Bangladesh Agricultural University Dairy Farm. These buffaloes were fed with the available grain fodder and they were given 6 to 7 hours of grazing daily. Detection .of estrus was done by buffalo bulls. A buffalo heifer showing standing heat was observed for the changes in behavior relating to bellowing, appetite, -sniffing of external genitalia by the bull and the fellow heifars, homosexual behaviour, acceptance of male, [solation from the herd, position of the tail condition of vulvular lips. and colour and consistency of vaginal discharge.

Achievement/Findings:

No anorexia was observed and the feeding behavior of the animals found to remain unchanged. Bellowing was observed as sign of estrus in 10 (66.7%) heifers
