Control of Rice Leaf Hoper with Sevido and Azodrin and Population of Different Species of Hoppers

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Two organophosphorus insecticides, Sevidol16 G and Azodrin 60% E C. applied on rice seedlings (Oriza saliva L.) under green house condition showed effective control of rice leaf hoppers. Sevidol with dosages 1.50, 2.25 and 3.00 kg/ha. a. i. showed good control upto 19 days while Azodrin with concentrations 0.03, 0.06 and 0.09 per cent solution gave good control upto 7 days Sevidol showed residual effectiveness upto 31 days although potency decreases from 19 days but Azodrin appears to lose its potency from 7 days. Relative seasonal abundance of 13 species of rice hoppers in rice fields was also studied.

Objectives:

To control of rice leaf hopper with sevidol and azodrin and find the population of different species of hoppers.

Methodology:

Rice seedlings were transplanted and kept in the green house in earthen pots of 24 cm diameter. The potted plants, 30 to 40 days old were treated with different dosages of Sevidol 16G and Azodrin 60 % E. C. Six pots were treated with each of the three dosages of Sevidol (3.00, 2.25 and 1.50 kg/ha) and Azodrin (0.03, 0.06 and 0.09 per cent). In case of Azodrin the foliar application was done by a hand sprayer while Sevidol was applied on the soil surface in water around the base of the plants. The adult unsexed leaf hoppers (Five N. apicalis Mots. and five N. impicticeps Ishihara) were introduced on the leaf surface of the treated pots on 4th, 7th, 13th, 19th, 25th and 31st days after treatment of Sevidol. In case of Azodrin the leaf hoppers were introduced on 1st, 4th, 7th, 10th 14th and 18th days after treatment. The insects were kept confined with the leaves in small cylindrical screen cages. Five tubes were placed in each pot including the control pots, to represent replications. Mortality was recorded 24, 38 and 72 hours after infestation. The percentage mortality was corrected by Abbott's formula. Twenty sweeps constituted a sample and collections were made in three different seasons after 30, 45 and 60 days of transplantation The insects were identified and percentage of each species was calculated for each season.

Achievement/Findings:

Seasonal relative abundance of rice hopper species indicates that all the 13 species identified, were available in all cropping seasons but their relative seasonal abundance varied greatly.
