A study was taken to conduct a study on the practices traditionally adopted in the homestead forests of Patiya Upazilla under Chittagon district. A total of 80 household s taking l0 from each village were sampled for the study representing landless, marginal, small, medium  and large farm categories. Both  male and female heads of the households were interviewed using pre-designed semi-structured questionnaire in two phases - from January to March and August to September 2000. The survey showed that 4% villagers used to do thinning, 43% pruning, 33% weeding. The villagers were also found very much conscious in cultural operations to the homestead forests. About 9% of the households  were  used  to  do  mulching,  33%, weeding, 70% fertilizing and 60% watering in the homestead forests. Fertilizing includes both chemical fertilizer and cow-dung. Watering used to be carried out  during  dry seasons and especially to fruit trees. The study revealed that only l 0% of the total households maintained  proper spacing throughout the whole growing period , while 47% of the households maintained spacing only during initial planting. There  is a common trend in the villages to plant various types of seedlings in any available space in their homesteads. Maintaining spacing was therefore, not a common practice in the homestead plantation.

  Adoption of technology

To conduct a study on the practices traditionally adopted in the homestead forests of Patiya Upazilla under Chittagon district.

Patiya Upazilla is situated almost in the central part of Chittagong district.  This Upazilla with an area of about 264 km2 including 1 km2 riverine land has 18 unions and 157 villages with a total population of 2,88,710 possessing about 1,186 ha  hilly  land, which constitutes 34.8% of the total area of the Upazilla. The soils are moderately alkaline to very acidic with slightly saline land locally (Anon, 1990). A multistage simple random sampling technique was undertaken, considering Upazilla (Patiya) as the pri mary sampling unit and the union (Jaunglekhine and Barautan) as the secondary sampling unit and the randomly selected hou seholds from the villages as the ultimate sampling units. From 18 unions of Patiya Upazilla, Jaunglekhine and Barautan unions were selected randomly which covered about 11% area of the total unions. From I0 villages of Jaunglekhine union, six villages (60% of total villages) namely, Larihara, Yakubdandi , Pirol, Wnainpura, Naikhine and Junglekhine were selected randomly. Barauatan union consisting of two villages namely Barautan and Daulatpur (100%), were selected for the study. A total of 80 household s taking l 0 from each village were sampled for the study representing landless, marginal, small, medium  and large farm categories. The study revealed that four different types of  planting  materials,  i .e.,  seeds, seedlings, vegetative propagule and stump, were used by  the  people.  Seedlings  as planting material was used by most of the households (86%). Planting materials used as seed, vegetative propagule and stump were 63%, 13% and l%, respectively. The various sources of planting materials used by the people in decreasing order were homestead (78%), Forest Department (51%), private nursery (46%), friend and relative (19%) and market  (13%).
