Coserving Soil Nitrogen and Increasing Productivity by Growing Azolla Simultaneously with Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The utility of Azolia as green manure for rice and the extent to which the use of commercial nitrogen fertilizers can be reduced were examined in the present study. Application of Azolia to rice fields retained higher soil nitrogen at all stages of growth. Yield of rice was also higher in plots receiving Azolla + NPK than plots with NPK alone.

Objectives:

To examine the utility of Azolia as green manure for rice and to extent the use of commercial nitrogen fertilizers.

Methodology:

The experimental plot was divided into three main blocks. Each block was subdivided into 14 plots of size 4 x 4 m² and 14 treatments were randomly arranged. In each block, one plot serving as control received no fertilizer, in another, only Azolla was given, in others phosphorus and potassium both at a fixed rate of 42 90.0 kg/ha were applied in the form of T. S. P and M. P respectively. Nitrogen as urea was given at varied rates (0.0, 22.5, 45.0, 67.5, 90.0, and 112.5 kg/ha). In one set Azolla was applied together with nitrogen. Thus, the treatments were divided into two sets. Set I- N_oP_oK_o, N_oPK, NoPK, N_22.5PK, N₄₅PK, N_67.5PK, N₉₀PK, N_112.5 and Set II- N_oP_oK_o + Azolla, N_oPK + Azolla, NoPK + Azolla, N_22.5PK + Azolla, N₄₅PK + Azolla, N_67.5PK + Azolla, N₉₀PK + Azolla, N_112.5+Azolla_.Fertilizers were added as basal dressing. Twenty days old BR-3 rice seedlings were transplanted 25 cm apart. Row to row distance was 30 cm. The bounded plots were flooded 7.5 cm deep and fresh Azolla at a fixed rate of 10 kg/plot (6.25 tons/ha) was added in the specified plots on the 15th day of transplantation. After one month, Azolla approximately doubled in number and covered almost the whole space. This was then incorporated into the soil manually. Total nitrogen content of soil before fertilizer application, on the date of Azolla addition, after 20 days of Azolla growth, after 10 days of Azolla incorporation and at maturity of rice was determined.
