Effect of Different Population Densities of Silk- Worm Bombyx Mori L, on the Incidence of Grasserie and Flacherie

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted in the a gro-ecological zone of Mymensingh to know the effect of different larval population densities on the incidence of grasserie and flacherie diseases of Nistari-114(M), RB-112(P) W and 05-Yellow(M) stratns of silkworm, Bombyx mori L. It was found that increase in population densities from 75 to 175 increased the incidence of both the diseases though the variation between 75 and 100 was not significant. 05- Yellow(M) was most susceptible to both the diseases followed by RB-112(P) W in both cases.

Objectives:

To observe the effect of population density on the incidence of grasserie and flacherie in the aqro-scoloqical zone of Mymensingh.

Methodology:

The study was conducted at Sericul- ture Project Laboratory Bangladesh Agril University, Mymensingh with five' population densities viz. 75, 100. 125, 150 and 175 using three strains, Nistari- 114 (M), RB-112 (P) Wand 05-Yellow (M). The experiment was set in a completelv Randomized Block Design with two replications and was repeated for two generations. Eggs were collected from Sericulture Project. Bangladesh Agricultural University and was hatched on a bamboo tray ( 30cm diameter) and were reared u pro second mouIting. At the begining of the third instar, the lar- vae were transferred in the experimental trays (30x30x15cm) where it reared upto pre-spinning. stage. Food was -offered four times a day at equal interval of six hours. The bed cleaning was done once in a day for removing the uncon- sumed leaves, silkworm faeces, diseased .and dead larvae, if any Disease(s) were identified and counted every day from very begining of the experiment ucto prespinning stage of larvae. The collected data were statisticslIy analysed and the mean values were compared according to Duncan's New Multiple Range Test.
