Mutual Growth Relationship Between Certain Phytoplanktons in Mixed-culturel

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Six species of freshwater phytoplanktonic representatives of the Chlorophyceae and Bacillariophyceae have been" employed in the study to know their interrelationships. All species were grown under" various light intensities keeping the other physical and chemical conditions similar during the period of the experiments. The principal finding of this work is that the three different types of tendencies were observed i. e., (i) mutual inhibition, (ii) mutual stimulation and (iii) one species stimulating or inhibiting the gro- wth of another species in culture experiments

Objectives:

To find out the interaction of different freshwater species in mixed culture as an ecological model.

Methodology:

Chlorella vulgaris, Chlamydomonas reinhardi, Scenedesmus quadricauda, Pan- dorina, morum, Synedra ulna and Volvox africanus were collected from lake Saga- mi, Japan. All of the stock cultures were made bar-teria free. The medium introduced by Prova, soli and Pintner (1959), with some modification, was employed in the experiment,. The modifications related to the doubling of the quantity of Nitrate and Phosphate in the medium. The PH of culture medium was adjusted at 7.5. Culture conditions: The innocuous were taken from the exponential phase of the stock culture, and added to the Erlenrnycr flasks containing 200 ml. of autoclaved medium. The initial density of each species was ] x 103 cells / m. Besides the two membered mixed-cultures, the unialgal cultures were maintained side by side as counterpoise with the some density of as in mixed culture, All cul- hires in flasks were kept under continuous illumination from cool white flour scent lamps. A total of 92 flasks containing cultures was kept on 4 special type of glass racks where light intensities were adjusted at 10,000, 5,000, 3,000 and 1,000 lux respectively. Cultures were mechanically stirred and were aerated with a stream of filtered air. The temperature was adjusted at 20°C with a plastic cooling coil inserted into the culture medium. Number of cells in each culture was determined by analyzing samples using a haemocytometer for each species.
