Effect of Waterhyacinth and Sediment on the Flow in Irrigation and Drainage Channel

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The effect of roots of water hyacinth and sediment concentration was verified by simulating flow in a shallow flume in Hydraulic Laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Myrnensingh varying both the root length and sediment concentration. The study reveals that the sediment is lost at different regimes of the flume in proportion to the concentration at the sump and length of root of water hyacinth, Statistical analysis shows that the effect of root length on the flow is highly significant and on the other band the effect of sediment concentration is insignificant.

Objectives:

To see the combined effect of water hyacinth roots and sediment concentration on the hydraulic capacity of the channel.

Methodology:

The research work was performed simulating the flow condition in a 10. 70 X 1. 90 X 1. 28 ft. flume with water hyacinth of different roots and different sediment concentrations at the Hydraulic laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. Following arrangements were made in the flume: a) The flume was lined with hessian cloths for simulating to the normal ear- then channel condition. b) A mechanism was made to maintain the constant head of flow through the flume passing out the excess amount of water. c) Collection tank fitted with water level indicator Was provided in the flow system for checking mean velocity of flow by volumetric method. d) The outlet of the flume was so controlled that the depth of flow was maintained almost uniform throughout the flume. e) Galvanized iron netting was put at the surface of water in the flume so that water hyacinths placed 'on the flume could be uniformly distributed through- out tbe flume surface. f) The sump was protected from external materials with the help of wire netting. Water hyacinth of different sizes and sediment of different concentrations were used in this experiment. The size of roots of the water hyacinth and the sediment concentration were the main factors in this study. Sediments used are silty loam collected from the river bed of old Brahmaputra river flowing parallel to the Agricultural University campus. The experiment was initiated with tap water. It was done by filling the sump with tap water and pumping tap water from sump into the experimental flume. The capacity of the flume was determined for tap water by measuring velocity of flow at three different sections at three different points and three different depths in each section (Rahman et al. 1975). Again the capacity of the flume was determined without sediment but with waterhyacinths of small medium and large sizes by the same way. Then the sediment at different concentrations was mixed at the sump and the sediment ladden water was pumped in tbe flume. The capacity of the flume was determined maintaining the concentration at 1500p.p.m. On completion of the above test, water hyacinth of small root size was set in the flume and the capacity of the flume was deter- mined with concentration of 1500 p.p.m. Similar experiment was conducted for medium and large size water hyacinths maintaining same concentration of sediment. The experiment was repeated for sediment concentrations of 2000, 2500 and 3000 p.p.m with different root sizes of water hyacinths, The sediment concentration at different sections of the flume for different root lengths and different sediment concentrations at the sump was' determined collecting about 300-500 ml. of sediment water from each section each time.
