Effect of Different Levels of Npk and Seed Rate on the Yield of Sesame

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, to study the effect of various NPK doses and seed rate on the yield of sesame. Number of seeds per capsule, weigh t of 1000 seeds and seed yield were highest from the second highest NPK dose of 44 kg N, 35 kg P and 45 kg K per hectare. On the other hand. maximum plant height, number of capsules per plant and stalk yield were produced by the highest dose of 66 kg N, 45 kg P and 56 kg K per hectare. Although the effect of seed rate was not significant. intermediate seed rate of 9 kg per hectare gave the best seed and stalk yields. Interaction effects showed that 44 kg N, 35 kg P and 45 kg K with a 9 kg seed rate per hectare were best for the highest seed yield of sesame.

Objectives:

To find out the optimum NPK dose and seed rate for sesame

Methodology:

The present experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensinqh on sandy loam soil of a medium high land belonging to the Old Brahmaputra Flood plain. The experiment included two factors with the following treatments : 1) NPK levels (kg/ha) : i) N_oP_o K_o, ii) N ₁₁ P ₁₅ K₂₃ , iii) N₂₂P₂₅K₃₄_, iv) N₄₄P₃₅K₄₅, and v) N₆₆P₄₅K₅₆.2) Seed rate kg/ha: i)7,ii) 9 and iii) 11. The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design with three replications. Seed rate was placed in the whole plot and NPK levels in the subplot. A local sesame variety, known as red sesame in Faridpur was used as the planting material. Urea, triple superphosphate and muriate of potash were used to supply N, P and K, respectively. Half of urea and whole of the other fertilizers", ere applied one day before sowing, and the remaining urea was topdressed 25 days after sowing. Seed was broadcast in plots measuring 3m x 3m and then covered with soil. Weeding was carried out three times 14. 28 and 48 days after sowing. Data on different crop characters were collected at maturity on 10 randomly selected plants except weight of 1000 seeds, seed, and stalk yields per plot which were collected from each plot. Data were analysed statistically and the significance of mean differences was adjudged by Tukey'shsd test.
