Soil Specific Nutrient Need Identification for Cotton

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Missing element trials on Cotton were conducted during three consecutive growi ng seasons of 1987-88, I 988-89 and 1989-90 in the Red Brown Terrace, the Grey Floodplain and the Calcareous Brown Flood plain Soiis of Bangladesh to idenlify the nutrients necessary to raise the crop successfully . Results on number of buds , flowers and bolls per plant, and seed cotton yield reflected that application of NPKS is unavoidable in all the three experiment soils. Applicalion of Mg along with NPKS in the Red Brown Terrace and Zn in the Calcareous Brown Floodplain Soils would result in appreciable increase in yield . The concentration of N and S in the leaves and the petioles of colton plants indicated a complementary relationship between them . The content of P and K in the studied plant parts were favourably influenced by their applicat ion .

Some missing element trials were primarily undertaken to find out the nutrients necessary for cotton in three different soils of the country .

Methodology:

The missing element trials were conducted in the Red Brown Terrace Soils of Sreepur, the Grey Flood plain Soils of Rangpur and the Calcareous Brown Floodplai n Soils of Jessore during three consecutive growing seasons of 1987-88, 1988-89 and 1989-90. The twelve treatments comprise one complete, one control , one having only added NPKS , one having only added NPK and eight other missing element treatments involving N, P, K, S, Zn , Mo, B and Mg. In the complete treatment. the nut rients were applied at the rate of N ₁₂₀ P ₁₀₀ K ₈₀ S₂₀ Zn₅Mo₂ B ₂Mg₅ from urea, TSP, MP, Gypsum , Zinc oxide, sodium molybdate, Boric acid and magnesium sulphate, respecti vely . In the ten treatments, all the nutrients except missing one (s) were applied at the rate mentioned above for t he complete treatment. The experiments were laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design with 3 replications

Achievement/Findings:

Thus, it may be concluded that application of NPKS is of immense importance for cotton production in all the three soiIs under study. The application of Mg and Zn coupled with NPKS may increase seed cotton yield substantially in the Red Brown Terrace Soils of Srccpur and in the Calcareous Brown Floodplain Soils of Jessore, respecti ely. However, it should be noted that the findings of the presnet study may be used as basic information about the nutrients that are to be applied for cotton in different soils. The l ocation-speci fic optimum doses of these nutrients for maximum economic yield of ctton are yet to be searched out through appropriate experiment.
