Effect of Leaf Clipping and Nitrogen on Yield and Quality of Wheat (triticum Vulgare)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

It was observed that both leaf clipping and nitrogen exhibited significant effect on the grain yield and protein content in grains of wheat. Grain yield and protein content increased in linear order with the increase of nitrogen supply. Leaf clipping had deleterious effect both on grain yield and protein content with exception or all but upper two leaf clipping where grain yield increased though not significantly over the non clipping treatment with higher percentage of protein content in grains. It was further observed that only flag leaf is equivalent to all other leaves in respect of grain yield and protein content of wheat grains. Interaction of clipping and nitrogen had significant effect on grain yield.

Objectives:

To find the effect of leaf clipping and nitrogen level on the yield and quality of wheat with an objective that if it does not reduce the yield so drastically, the affected leaf clipping could be suggested as a partial solution to combat rust and blast diseases, the great menace of this crop and to help increase wheat production.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the farm of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from December, 1972 to April, 1973. The soil was sandy loam in texture with a pH value of 6.5. Larma.Rojo, a mexican wheat cultivar was used for the experiment. The experimental land was prep- ared after the harvest of the previous crop (grass pea). Triple supper phosphate (@44% P P5) at the rate of 89.68kg/ha and muriate of potash (@60% K₂0) at the rate of 87.44kg/ha were applied at final ploughing of the land. Nitrogen was applied at different dosesas per treatment ranging from 0-112 kg/ha through urea (44 % N) and was applied as top dressing in 3 installments after sowing. The experiment was laid-out in randomized block design with 3 replications. There were two sets of treatments, 5 leaf clipping and 4 nitrogen levels. The total plots were 60. The clipping treatments were : No clipping-(Co), only flag leaf clipping (C₁), All except upper two (C₂), All except flag leaf (C₃) , Complete clipping (C₄). The nitrogen levels were : No nitrogen (N_o)-control; 44.84 kg/ha (N₁); 67.26 kg/ha (N₂); 112.10 kg/ha (N₃). The first dose of nitrogen (urea) was applied one day before sowing and the second dose at 55th day of sowing. The last and final dose was applied at 65th day of sowing of seeds. Spacing were 4.6 0 cm from row to row and 1.95 em from seed to seed within rows. The clipping of leaves were done on 70th day of sowing seeds (26 % flowering stage). Clipping of leaves were done by fine scissors and only the leaf blades were removed. All other cultural practices were kept constant. The percentage of nitrogen was determined by estimating the same by Kjeldahl method which was multiplied by 6.25 to get the percentage of protein in grains. The observation was made on the following plant characters, plant height, Leaf Clipping and Nitrogen on Wheat number of total earbearing tillers/hill, length of panicle, number of total florets and filled grains/panicle, total grain and straw yield/plot, 1000 grain weight, and percentage of protein in grains. The data collected were statistically analyzed.
