Response of Potato to Irrigation at Varying Nitrogen Levels

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Yield and water use of potato (cv. Cardinal) were observed under varying levels of irrigat ion and nitrogen in Grey Terrace Soil of Joydebpur and Calcareous Floodplain Soil of Jessore. Amount of irrigation water (20.7 cm at Joydebpur and 25.7 cm at Jessore) equivalent to 50% in excess of evapo-transpiration (ET) calculated using ten years average climatic data with the help of Penman's formula was found to be optimum for successful raisi ng the crop. Tuber yield of potato significantly increased with higher N levels upto l60 kg/ha. Total water use by potato varied from 19.5 lo 32.3 cm at loydebpur and from 23.5 to 40.0 cm at Jessore . The water use efficiency (WUE) was higher with irrigation water just meeting ET in most cases at Joydcbpur. /t Jcssore, irrigation water application at 50% deficit of ET showed higher WUE with any given level of nitrogen. Higher level of nitrogen resulted in decreased total water use and i nereased WUE under any given irrigition level in botrh locations

To investigate the effect of irrigation and nitrogen for boosting up potato production .

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in two locations namely, Joydebpur and Jessore representing Grey Terrace and Calcareous Floodplain soils of B angladesh, respectively. Three irrigation treatments were chooscn on the basis of calculated evapotranspiration (ET). These were, I₁ = ApplicaLion of irrgation water 50% deficit of ET; I₂ = Application of irrgation waler meeting, I₃= Application of irrigati on water at 50% excess of ET. Evapotranspiration was calculated using the modified Penmen's equation ( 1) for di fferent growth stages of potato using the average climatic data of the experimental areas for ten years. The required amounts of water in each treatment were applied at the three imponant growth stages of potato (stolonization, tuberization and bulking) . In determining the amount of irrigation water, rain fall was subtracted from the values obtained on the basis of ET. Total water used was computed indirectly using water balance equation of R ose (10) assuming the drainage component equal Lo zero. The water utilization by a crop is generally described in terms of water use efficiency (WUE). Water use efficiency was calculated as described by Cassel ct al. (3) and expressed as kg/ha/cm water used .

Achievement/Findings:

The present study inferred that irrigation with 50% in excess of ET (20.7 cm at Joydebpur and 25.65 cm at Jessore) along with 160 kg N/ha might be helpful in boasting up potato production in Grey Terrace Soil of Joydebpur and Calcareous Flood plain Soil of Jessore. The excess waler beyond the evapotranspiration demand of the crop might be necessary for balancing the losses due to deep percolation, and seepage in field channels. However, more site specific information would be necessary before a general recommend about the the irrgation requirement based on the Penman 's formula is established
