Irrigation and Phosphorus Fertilization on the Grwth, Yield, and Nutrient Uptake of Maize

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In a field trial maize cv. Suwan No.1 was grown in acid sulphate soil during the dry season of 1978 to study the effects of irrigation and phosphorus fertilization on the growth. yield and nutrient uptake of maize. Three phosphorus fertilizer treatments designated as P_o. P₅₀ and P₁₀₀ along with 100kg N+ 50 kg k/ha and three irrigation treatments designated as I₁, I₂and I₃ were used having three replicates. The yield data showed that the grain yield of maize increased with increasing amount of phosphorus fertilization and irrigation. The treatment I₃P₁₀₀ produced maximum grain yield while treatment I₁P₀ produced minimum grain yield. However, maximum difference in grain yield was obtained between I₂ and I₃ for various levels of P. Concentration of N. P. K and Na increased with increasing amounts of applied phosphorus and irrigation frequency. The trend of increase. however. was different for different phosphorus fertilization and irrigation treatments. The results revealed that tne concentration of N. P. K and Na were always higher in the order of I₃P₁₀₀>I₂P_5O>I₁P₀ at all gm DM-weight per plant from emergence to maturity.

Objectives:

To find out the, effects of irrigation and P fertilization on the growth, yield and nutrient uptake of maize.

Methodology:

A field experiment was carried out on acid-sulphate soiI during January-April. 1978. The soil, clay loam, consisted of 11.4% sand 26.6% silt and 62.0% clay. The moisture held at 0.03 MPa (= 0.3 bar) was 38% and at -1.50 MPa ( ='5 bar) was 20% by weight basis. thus the available soil moisture was 18%. Bulk density, pH and CEC of the soil were 1.63 g cm^-3. 3.60 and 26.40 meq/100 g soil, respectively. The mean daily evaporation was 6.1 mm/day and 42.4 mm rainfall occured during the growing season. A split-plot design was followed having three irrigation treatments as the main plot and three phosphorus treatments as the sub-plot with three replicates. The irrigation treatments were; I₁-water applied up to field capacity (F. C.) when 70% of the available moisture depleted; I₂-water applied upto F.C. when 35% of the available soil moisture depleted. and l₃-Fully irrigated (daily) to meet the evapotranspiration (ET) loss. Three fertilizer treatments were - 0 (Po ). 50 ( P₅₀) and 100 ( P₁₀₀) kg P/ha along with 100 kg N/ha + 50 kg K/ha. The fertilizers were thoroughly mixed as per treatment and applied in band, two days before sowing. Maize cv. Suwan-1 was sown at 8 population density of 53.000/ha at an usual spacing of 75 cm between and 25 cm within rows in 16 m² (4m x 4m) plots on 14 January and harvested on 6 April 1978. Just after sowing all the plots were irrigated uniformly irrespective of treatments for about two weeks and then water was applied in accordance with the irrigation treatments. Water was applied by plastic pipe connected to a 20 mm water meter which was used to record the quantity of water discharged. Irriga- tion water was applied based on root zone depth of the crop.
