Study on Groundnut Rows Grown in Association with Normal and Paired Row of Maize

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at Kishoreganj. from February to July 1987 to study the effect of planting system of maize with rows of groundnut grown as mono and /Intercrop. Maximum grain yield of maize (2.96 t/ha) was obtained from monoculture in uniform row which was identical to maize uniform row with two or three row groundnut. Higher maize and groundnut equivalent was found In uniform 3 or paired 6 rows of groundnut. Both the former and the latter combination gave highest LER (1.44) and net return of TK. 8719 & 8502 /ha. having same benefit cost ratio.

Objectives:

The present study consisting of different rows of groundnut with normal and paired row of maize to evaluate their effects.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted on a medium high land of Agril. Research Sub- station Kishoreganj during the period from February through July 1987. There were eight treatments Viz. i) Mono- culture maize in uniform row (UR.) ii) monoculture maize in paried row (PR). iii) Maize (UR) + 2 rows of groundnut, iv) Maize (UR) +3 rows of groundnut. v) Maize paired row (PR) +4 rows of groundnut, vi) Maize (PR) +5 rows of groundnut, vii) Maize (PR) +6 rows of groundnuf and viii) monoculture groundnut, The experiment was laidout in a randomized block design with four replications. Maize and groundnut seeds were sown on 11 February, 1987. The planting systems of maize (uniform row and paired row) were followed where uniform row spacing was 75cm and in paired row method two maize rows were at 37.5cm apart; while two pairs were separated at a distance of 150 cm. Plant to plant spacing for maize was 25 cm in both methods. In uniform row method 2 and 3 rows of groundnut Were sown between the maize rows while in paired row method 4. 5. and 6 rows of groundnut were sown at a distance of 25 cm X 15 cm. The variety DM-I and Barnali were used for groundnut & maize respectively. Twenty kilogram of nitrogen and full amount of 60 P₂O₅; and 40 K₂0 kg/ha were applied as basal dose. The remaining 100 kg N/ha was applied in two equal splits as (side dressed) and incorporated into the soil only in maize row at 25 and 45 days after seeding (DAS), Only one irrigation was given 25 DAS. Maize and groundnut were harvested on 20 May & 15 June. 1987 respectively. The maize yield was converted into the yield of groundnut and vice versa.

Achievement/Findings:

The higher LER in intercrop treatments also indicate that groundnut can be intercropped with maize for higher production. In uniform row and paired row planting system relative yield of maize reduced by only 2 to 9 % in either 3 or 6 row of groundnut, but the yield of ground nut was reduced by 38 to 65% in different treatments.
