A Comparative Study of the Wool Quallity of Romney and Perendale Graded Sheep

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A total of 12 Romney Marsh and 9 Perendale Graded Sheep were studied in this experiment. The average fineness of Romney and Perendale Graded Sheep were 35.2±3.7 and 31.1±3.7 microns, respectively. The percentage of true wool fibres, heterotypical fibres and medullated fibres averaged 38.9±8.0, 19.5±4.9 and 41.6±5.7, respectively for Romney Graded Sheep and those of Perendale Graded Sheep were 45.3±5.7. 13.5±2.2 and 41.2.±5.4, respectively.

Objectives:

To compare the wool quality in respect of fineness and the percentage of different types of wool fibres of Romney and Perendale Graded Sheep.

Methodology:

A total of 12 Romney Graded (male Romney x female Lohi Grade II) and 09 Perendale Graded (male Perendale xfemale Lohi Grade II ) sheep of different age and sex groups were selected at random from Bangladesh Agricultural University Sheep Farm for this study. Out of 12 Romney Graded Sheep 4 were ewes, 4 ewe lambs and 4 ram lambs. Among 09 Perendale Graded Sheep 3 each of ewe, ewe lambs and ram lambs were selected. The experimental animals were kept under identical environment and with same feed. They were allowed to graze for about 6 - 8 hours daily within the farm area. In addition they were supplied with a concentrate mixture composed of wheat bran, crushed kheshari and til oil cake at the ratio of 2: 1 : 1 and at the rate of 6 ounces per head per day. Two percent common salt was also added to concentrate mixture. All the animals were subjected to similar care and management through out the period of study. Preventive measures were taken against parasitic and infections diseases through out the study period. The experimental animals were shea- red on the same day in the month of October 1980. A few tufts of representative staples were taken from the fleece of each animal under study. The staples were placed in a petridish and washed with benzole to remove grease and then dried. A few cuttings were taken from each staple of a sample at an interval of i inch so that variation in fineness of the same fibre along the length may also be counted for. After enough cuttings were obtained they were further cut to make them about 0.2mm in length. The cuttings were again washed with ether. After dryinq the cuttings were spread evenly in a petridish and three slides were prepared from different regions of each petridish. Individual firbre was focused and measured from one edge of the fibre to the other and their thickness and different types of wool fibres such as true wool fibres. heterotypical fibres and medullated fibres were studied. In order to have accuracy in reading a total of 300 fibres were measured and counted from each slide and avaraqe fineness and percentage of different types of wool fibres were calculated. The same procedure was followed for all the samples.
