Effectivess of Some Rhizobium Strains on Blackgram

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field trial was conducted with six rhizobial strains BAU 501, BAU 502. BAU 504. BAU 510. BAU 511 and BAU 512 on T-9 variety of blackgram. Significant beneficial effect was observed due to Rhizobium inoculation on nodulation, shoot and total dry matter weight and N uptake by shoot recorded after 42 days of sowing. Beneficial effect of inoculation was also observed on grain and straw yield as well as N uptake by the crop. The strain BAU 510 appeared to be the best in the recorded results in almost all the parameters studied.

Objectives:

To determine the effect of rhizobium inoculation on nodulation, dry matter weight and N uptake by blackgram.

Methodology:

A field trial was carried out at Bangladesh Agricultural University Farm during the rabi season of 1982-83 with different strains of blackgram rhizobia On T - 9 variety as the test crop. The six strains of blackgram rhizobia: BAU-501, BAU-502; BAU-504, BAU-510, BAU- 511 and BAU-512 were used. Seeds were treated with the inoculants using gum acacia as the sticker and sown in the field in the afternoon. The trial was laidout in randomized block design using four replications having unit plot size of 5m x 3m. Basal dose of 60kg P₂0₅ and 40kg K₂0/ha were applied from triple superphosphate and muriate of potash, respectively. After 42 days of sowing, ten representative plants from each plot were uprooted to make records on nodulation and dry matter weight of nodules, shoot and root. The crop was harvested at full maturity and the grain and straw yields estimated. N content in plant materials was determined following the method of Chapman and Partt (1961). Nitrogen uptake was calculated from the N content of plant materials on oven drv basis. Analysis of variance of different characters of the crop was made and their mean difference was adjudged :by Duncan's New Multiple Range Test.
