Effects of Fe, Cu. Zn and Mo on the Nitrogen Mineralization During Incubation of an Acid Tea Soil of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Acid tea soil ( pH 4.2) from Sylhet, Bangladesh where tea bushes are currently being grown was collected. A study was made of the effects of addition of Fe, Cu and Zn (as sulphate) and Mo ( as sodium molybdate) on the changes in N -mineralization and nitrification during incubation (6. 12, and 24 weeks; 30oC) of the soil at 50% maximum water holding capacity (mwhc),Compared with control, all added elements increased nitrification after all periods of incubation. Zn consistently stimulated 'the maximum nitrification. Also, zinc gave the highest accumulation of mineral-N (min-N) up to 12 weeks, whereas Mo seemed to have stimulated the highest min-N accumulation after 24 weeks. Fe and Cu decreased rnin-N accumulation after 6 weeks, increased it after 12 weeks and had no effects after 24 weeks. At acidic p^_H the tea soil might be deficient in several essential elements which are lost through. leaching and cropping. Repleneshing the soil with these elements it is expected that . they will increase nitrification and, as a result, proliferation of soil micro flora.

Objectives:

To study the effects of addition of Fe, Cu and Zn (as sulphate) and Mo ( as sodium molybdate) on the changes in N -mineralization and nitrification during incubation

Methodology:

One lot of fresh field tea soils from Sylhet, a typical tea growing area of Bangladesh, was used in this study. The samples were air-dried at laboratory temperature and ground to pass a 22 mesh sieve before use. The work was conducted during 1973-74 session. All metallic elements used were added in the forms of their finely ground Analar or reagent grade. Fe, Cu, and Zn (100 ppm ) were added as sulphates and Mo ( 20 pprn ) as sodium molybdate. The mechanical analysis of the soil was done by using the standard pipette and sieving method. The soil was found to be a sandy loam and contained 61 % sand ( > 0.05 mm ), 26% silt (0.002 to 0.05 mm j, 13 % clay ( LO.002 mm ). It contained 0.10% total N (Kjeldahl meth- od), 1.15% organic carbon ( "Walkley- Black" procedure) and had a pH 4.2 (in water ). The details of the incubation technique used were described by Ekpete and Cornfield ( 1966). 10 gm. portions of soil were set up' in 4" x l " diameter glass tubes with eight replications to allow for analysis in duplicate initially and after' each incubation period with or without added elements. The barium peroxide method (Cornfield, 1961 ) was' used for aeration and absorption of carbon di- oxide during incubation (30°C) of the tubes which were closed with rubber bungs. Incubation periods of 6, 12 and 24 weeks were used and the moisture content used was 50% maximum water holding capacity (mwhc). After each incubation period 10 ml. of water was added to each tube and pH determined after shaking.
