Collection and Evaluation of Bael (aegle Marmelos Corr.) Germplasm

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Twenty two bael germplasm were evaluated at the RHRS, Chapainawabganj during 2013-14. A wide variation was observed among the germplasm regarding quantitative characteristics. Fruits/plant varied from 01 (AM Cha-002) to 70 (AM Cha-007). The heaviest (2.9 kg) fruit was found in AM Cha-04 and the lightest (650 g) at AM Cha- 19. Fruit length of different bael genotype varied from 6.8 cm (AM Cha-06) to 28.9 cm (AM Cha-04), while fruit breadth ranged from 10.6 cm (AM Cha-019) to 63.0 cm (AM Cha-04). Pulp weight ranged 414 g (AM Cha-019) to 2305 g (AM Cha-04). The skull weight varied from 142.0 g (AM CHA-05) to 450.0.0 g(AM CHA-04) whereas the fibre weight varied from 30.0 g (AM Cha-05) to 95.0 g (AM Cha-04). Maximum seed weight (45.0 g) was recorded in (AM Cha-03) whereas the minimum (16 g) was noted in AM Cha-07 and AM Cha-08. The seeds/fruit in different genotypes ranged from 76 to 170. The rind thickness varied from 0.2 to 0.4 cm. TSS was maximum (37%) in AM Cha-04 and AM Cha-008 while it was noted minimum (28%) in AM Cha-013. AM Cha- 001, AM Cha-003 and AM Cha- 007 exhibited 30-35% sooty mould infection.

Objectives:

To study the performance of bael germplasm at Chapainawabganj
To evaluate, characterized and documented the bael germplasm for future utilization
To select superior bael germplam in respect to yield and fruit quality for developed as varieties

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Regional Horticulture Research Station, Chapainawabganj during 2012-14. The grafts of 22 bael germplasm (AM Cha-001to AM Cha-022) which were preliminary selected through fruit show 2006. Scions of selected bael germplasm were collected from the different places of Chapainawabganj and Rajshahi district and grafted on to one year old seedling. Grafts were planted in July 2007 and 2008. Planting distance was maintained at 5 x 5 m in both ways. Manures and fertilizers were used as follows; Cowdung: 30 kg, urea: 550 g, TSP: 300 g, MoP: 250 g, zypsum: 100 g, zinc Sulphate: 25 g, boric acid: 20 g per plant per year. Data on different quantitative characters viz. tree volume (m³), number of fruit per plant, fruit length, fruit diameter, fruit weight, pulp weight (g), skull weight (g), rind thickness (cm), seed/fruit, seed weight (g), fiber weight (g), TSS and yield per plant, percent diseases-insect reaction. The quantitative characters were recorded by instrumentally. The rind thickness was determined with the help of vernier calipers. Peel, pulp, fibre and seeds were separated, weighed and calculated in per cent on fresh weight basis. The TSS of fruit pulp was determined with the help of hand refractometer.

Achievement/Findings:

In consideration of fruit size, yield, weight of fibre, seed number, seed weight, edible portion and TSS content, AM 002, AM Cha-004, AM Cha-005, AM Cha-006, AM Cha-008, AM Cha-09, AM Cha-010 and AM Cha-013 were found promising and might be utilized for future research. After 2-3 years evaluation of the selected germplasm 1/2 bale lines will be release as variety(ies) for commercial cultivation.
