The Response of Mustard to Irrigation at Different Levels of Sulphur

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The response of mustard to moisture regimes at varying sulphur levels was studied at three different soils types: Calcareous Floodplain Soils of Jessore, Calcareous Drown Floodplain Soils of Ishurdi and Grey Floodplain Soils of Jamalpur, In Jessore a preliminary study was conducted during rabi 1981-82 to study the effect of water use of mustard under different levels of sulphur in rainfed condition. The increasing trend of yield noticed in the experiment necessitated the present study for formulating the irrigation scheduling. The present study was conducted during the rabi season 1982-83 at locations men- tioned above. 'Oil seed yields were significantly increased both by the amount of irrigation and sulphur in all the locations except Jarnalpur, The results indicated that 10-20 kg/ha of sulphur from gypsum with the total water use around 112- 120 rnrn may boost up the production of mustard particularly in Calcareous Floodplnin Soils. The other yield components such as plant height, number of pods/plant showed similar increasing trend like grain yields but only significant at Calcareous Brown Floodplain Soils of Tshurdi.

Objectives:

To find out the appropriate levels of sulphur fo mustard production in soils with limited reserve of sulphur. Since sulphur availability is a function of soil moisture condition therefore, a correct interaction of sulphur and in irrigation water is a prerequisite for developing mustard production programme.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted during rabi season of 1982-83 at three research stations of DARI (Jessore, Ishurdi and Jamalpur). It was a split plot design with three replications. Irrigation levels were assigned to the main plots and sulphur doses to the sub-plots. Gypsum was used to supply sulphur the rates of 0 (T_o), 10 (T₂), 20 (T₃) and 30 (T4) kg S/ha, but one additional treatment (T₁) was used with Ca only to find its singular effect, if any. Calcium oxide was used as a source of calcium in T₁ treatment, and was applied at the at rate of 37 kg Ca/ha which was equivalent to the amount of calcium applied through gypsum in the T₄ treatment. The. irrigation treatments were scheduled to correspond with critical growth stages (as suggested by Oil Seed Project, BARI) and on the basis of 80% rainfall probability of the specific location. The irrigation treatments were I_o (No irrigation, rainfed), I₁(one irrigation at 50th day after sowing i.e. at flowering stage), I₂ (two irrigations 50th and 70lh days alter sowing i.e. at flowering and at pod filling stages): The irrigation at preflowcring vegetative stage i.e. 25 days after sowing was not included due to about 20 mm rain in all the locations during this period.

Achievement/Findings:

Soil water depletion decreased progresively with increased irrigation application. The seasonal water requirementfor higher yield in the irrigated plots for Jessore was around 112-135 mm, whereas for Ishurdi, this value was around 120-139 mm, suggesting no appreciable difference in water requirements in Calcareous Soils. However, the Grey Floodplain Soils of Jamalpur showed marked differences from other locations in water requirement ranging from 70-108 mm. Water use efficiency (WUE) increased only upto single irrigation at Jessore and Ishurdi but at Jamalpur the WUE decreased with increasing irrigations, suggesting ineffectiveness of irrigation in increasing the yield of mustard at Jamalpur. The water use efficiency for irrigation water was calculated and found to be highest with single irrigation at Jessore and Ishurdi, suggesting that 25 mm of irrigation water was most profitably and efficiently used in both the locations in addition to rainfall.
