A Comparative Study of Birth Weight and Age at Sextual Maturity of Native and Up-graded Lohi Sheep.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Average birth weight calculated on a total number of 248 births representing different grades were 4.03 ± 0.34 lbs., 4.02 i: 0.38 lbs., 4.00::i: 0.52 lbs. and 3.90 ± 0.37 lbs., for grade I, II, III and IV respectively, It ranged from 2.50 to 6.50 lbs. for grade I ; 2.50 to 8.00 Ibs. for grade II ; 2.00 to 9.00 Ibs. for grade III, 2.00 to 6.00Ibs. for grade IV. Analysis of variance for birth weight indicated insignificant difference between the grades. Age at -sexual maturity of 101 ewes of native and different grades were studied. The average age at maturity, for native were 430.15 ± 55.65 days; grade. I 3.88.55 :i: 50.86 days, grade II 438.34 ± 55.32 days and grade Il l 4;Z.60.:t 37.40 days. Age at sexual maturity ranged from 195-717 days, 189.941 days, 200. 942 days, and 292-605 days. for native, -grad s 1, grade II, and In respectively. The results of analysis of variance was. insignificant.

Objectives:

To investigate the important economic trails, such as birth weight and age at sexual maturity of the different grades of Lohi sheep maintained in the University sheep farm for the last ten years to up-grade the indigenous stock.

Methodology:

Data used in this study were collectcd from the records kept during the period from 1961 to 1971. On sheep flock maintained at the Bangladesh Agricultural University sheep farm. Management of experimental animals were similar over the years. Off coloured animals were called as soon as disposable to have a flock of white herd. Preventive measures were taken against the parasitic and infectious diseases throughout the period under review. The sheep were sheared twice a year once in March -April and again in October-November each year. Weak, emaciated animals were disposed as soon as noticeable. The weather condition during the period under study was more or less similar. The progenies born were raised on similar type of ration consisting of a concentrate mixture of wheat bran, oil-cake and crushed Khesari in the ratio of 10 : 4 : 5. Common salt was used at the rate of 2 % of the mixture. The protein content of the mixture was appromately 18 % and each animal was fed 4-6 oz. of the concentrate mixture daily. The flock was allowed to graze 6-8 hours daily. Birth Weight: Individual birth weight together with the type of birth and sex of the new born lambs was recorded. Birth weight of the lambs was determined by a weighing balance within 12 hours after birth. Total number of birth weight of lambs was 34, 88, 110 and 16 respectively for grade I, II, III and IV. Age at sexual maturity: Signs of first oestrum was the basis of calculation of their age at sexual ma- turity. Vasectomized ram was allowed with the flock to detect the ewe in oes- trum. Date of first oestrum was noted. The total number of ewes whose age at sexual maturity was studied were '-'7 for native, 43 for grade 1, 26 for grade II and 5 for grade IlIon day basis. Their age at sexual maturity was calculated from the date of birth to date of first oestrum.
