Impact of Improved Farm Technology on Pattern of Income Distribution in a Selected Rural Area of Mymensingh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In this paper an attempt has been made to study the impact of improved farm technology, adopted by different categories of cultivators on the magnitude aud patterns on income and income distribution in the Village Khagdahar of Mymensingh District. For the purpose of the study an equal number of samples from progressive and less progressive farms were selec ted. The design of the sample was a combination of random and purposive sampling which was done by taking into account the holding size of the farmers viz., small, medium and big. The analysis indicates that there was a skewed income distribution. People with resource endowments, particularly the progressive farmers have taken advantage of the new technology and their incomes showed a rising trend. But the rate of growth of income of small and medium progressive farmers were much faster than that of the big farmers. Again. it was found that because of the adoption of improved farm technology, a sub stantial share of the increased income of the progressive farmers went to hired. labour which was supplied by landless la- bourers or very small farmers which indicate a positive income distribution from the social point of view.

Objectives:

(i) To determine the variation of income as function of adoption of improved farm technology among different categories of farm families.

(ii) To analyze the impact of improved farm technology on the pattern of income distribution.

Methodology:

For this study a single village named Khagdohor under Kotwali P. S. of Mymensingh district was purposively selected because of its easy accessibility from the University Campus and that it has all the characteristics of a typical village lying by the bank of the old Brahmaputra river. The soil is clay loamy and the land remains free from flood. The land surface is flat and uniformly levelled. The area being free from annual flood, the farming bas to depend upon natural precipitation and artificial irrigation by deep and shallow tube wells. The average rainfall during the year was 87 inches with the mean highest rainfall of 17.60 inches in June to as lowest mean of 0.09 inch in December. The study area covered 1139 acres. The population of the area according to District Census Report of 1961 was 2333 of which 1187 were males and 1116 females. There were 488 farm families in all. The main occupation of the villagers was cultivation though wage earners, day labourers, service- holders and businessmen and people engaged in small trades were also found. Literacy percentage appeared to be higher than that of a typical village in other places because of its proximity to Mymensingh town and greater educational facilities and so non-farm employment was increasing. Rice, vege- tables, ftuits, etc., are the main crops. grown in the area. Land is very unevenly distributed in the Survey area ranging from landless to about 37 acres of land owners. Overwhelmed majority of farmers own very small land holding and the land. less laborer mostly depend upon the employment they get in farms of big land owners cannot supply all the labourers they require. Arnan, Boro, Aus all the three crops are grown. Though the major share of their in. come comes from cereal crops, livestock, poultry and dairy products are also minor Sources of the farm income.

Achievement/Findings:

Again. it was found that because of the adoption of improved farm technology, a substantial share of the increased income of the progressive farmers went to hired. labour which was supplied by landless labourers or very small farmers which indicate a positive income distribution from the social point of view.
