Yield and Water Use of Brinjal as Influenced by Varying Levels of Irrigation and Nitrogen

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The brinjal cultivar 'Uttara' was grown under dillcrent levels 0f irrigation and nitrogen in Grey Terrace Soil of Joydebpur and Grey Floodplain Soil of Jarnalpur during two consecutive rabi seasons of 1990-91 and 1991-92. The irrigation schedules were based on four different ratios (1.0, 0.8, 0.6 and 0.4) of a fixed irrigation water (IW): cumulative pan evaporation (CPE). The fixed irrigation depth was 4 cm. The three nitrogen levels were 100,150 and 200 kg N per hectare in 1990-91 and 150, 200 and 250 kg N per hectare in 1991-92. The yield increased significantly with irrigation based on higher IW:CPE ratio upto 0.8 irrespective of soil types and growing seasons. Significant yield response to nitrogen fertilization was observed upto 200 kg N per hectare in both the soils irrespective of growing seasons. The interaction effect 0f irrigation and nitrogen on yield was also significant. The water use efficiency for the irrigation treatment based on IW:CPE ratio 0.8 was maximum and improved with higher levels of nitrogen. The results suggest to apply 200 kg N per hectare along with irrigation at IW:CPE ratio of 0.8 for optimum yield. The total water expense for this treatment was 39-45 cm.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the central research station of Bangaldesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI). Joydebpur and Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS). Jamalpur during two consecutive rabi seasons of 1990-91 and1991-92 to evaluate the irrigation and nitrogen requirement of brinjal. Important soil properties of the experimental locations were determined in the laboratory and field. The brinjal cultivar, Uttara was used as the test crop. The 12 experimental treatments comprised four levels of irrigation in combination with three levels of nitrogen. The irrigation treatments were based on IW:CPE ratio 'of 1.0, 0.8, 0.6 and 0.4. The irrigation depth was kept fixed at 4cm for all the irrigation treatments. During 1990-91, the three nitrogen levels were 100, 150, and 200 kg N per hectare and a sionificant yield response was observed upto the highest level. Hence, in the following year (1991-92), the three nitrogen levels used were viz., 150, 200 and 250kg N per hectare. The experimental design was split-plot with three replications where irrigation and nitrogen levels were assigned in the main-plots and sub-plots, respectively

Achievement/Findings:

The interaction effect of irrigation and nitrogen on yield was significant . The yields obtained with irrigation at IW: CPE ratio of 0.8 and 200kg N/ha (I₂ N200) were always significantly higher than those of all combinations having lower levels of irrigation and/or nitrogen. Higher levels of irrigation and/or nitrogen beyond this combination (I₂ N2oo) increased the yield insignificantly Hence, this combination of irrigation and nitrogen fertilization may be considered as judicious for producing the optimum yield.
