Br22 and Br23 - Two Photoperiod Sensitive Modern Rice Varieties

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

BR22 has been developed from the cross Nizersail X BR51-46-5 and BR23, DA29 X BR4. Nizersail and DA29 are the two strongly photoperiod-sensitive (PS) traditional varieties suitable for rainfed lowland rice (RLR)- ecosystem of Bangladesh. BR22 and BR23 show the degree of sensitivity to photoperiod as strong as Nizersail. On the other hand, these varieties posses modern plant architecture but intermediate stature with lodging resistance and high-yield potential comparable to other modem rice. The long felt requirement of modem but strong PS varieties for RLR is accomplished by the development of these two varieties. Moreover, these varieties are adapted for late (September) planting where Nizersail and similar other traditional varieties have been planted with low yield.

Objectives:

To study the adaptability of the two strongly PS modem rices, BR22 and BR23 under normal and late planting situation.

Methodology:

Two popular strong PS local rice varieties viz. Nizersail and DA29 were crossed in 1976-1977 at BRRI respectively with BR51-46-5 and BR4 at Gazipur, 24⁰N latitude. The F_Ipopulation and the ensuring generations of the crosses were sown on 15 May along with parents so that the plant population received enough time to complete vegetative phase before the beginning of short-day lengths from October. The segregants flowered before September were considered as photoperiod insensitive and rouged out, those found lodging resistant, taller statured with improved plant types and flowering similar to Nizersail were selected at each segregating generation: The pedigree selection procedures were followed for handling the segregating materials. Among the promising advanced breeding lines, BR539-17-4-3-3-1 and BR716-7-2-1-1 were found superior in the stepwise tests, viz. observational trial, preliminary yield trial, secondary yield trial, regional yield trial, and advanced lines adaptive research trials at farmers' fields. Data on seedling heights (at transplanting) were taken from 10 random seedlings and the plant heights were measured at maturity for 10 plants in a plot excluding border rows and plants surrounded by missing hills. Grain yield was obtained from the whole plot. These observations were recorded at Gazipur, Comilla, Barisal and Rajshahi regional stations consequently from 1985 to 1988. The trials were made in a RCB design with three replications in a 2.0- x 5.4- m plot spaced at 25- x 15- cm using 2-3 seedlings per hill. At normal season transplanting, 30 day old seedlings were transplanted between 6 and 14 August, while 40 day old seedlings were used for late season plantings (15-22 September) over the years and across the locations. The crop was grown irrigated and fertilized with 80-60-40 kg NPK/ha. All the P, K and one-half of N were applied as basal; the remaining N was given at 30 DAT.
