20 samples of shellac were collected from different lac factories in Bangladesh and their specification (physical and chemical constants was found, Volatile matter 1.9-2.1% ; Matter insoluble in hot alcohol 2.5-3% ; Ash 0.9-1.2% ; wax5-5.5% ; Iodine value 17.8-18.2; Acid value 65-72; specification value 224-230 ; Softening point 72-80oC ; orpiment 0.5-0.7% Lead Nil and Rosin Nil.

To find out the specification of shel lac produced in Bangladesh

20 samples of shellac were collected from different lac factories of Nawabgonj, Rajshahi, All the individual samples were mixed thoroughly and stored in desiccators. A small portion of each of the sample was taken for individual test. All the experiments were carried out according to the directions followed in "specification for Hand-made Shellac" British Standard Institute ( 1960). "Shellac-Its origin and application" ( Edward. 1961) "Shellac" Official methods of ana- lysis (1957). I.S. O. recommendation ( 1957) .

It was observed that shellac produced in different factories of Bangladesh is of the same specification. Lead salt and rosin are not used as adulterants in  the physical and chemical constants of all the individual sample vary 'within a small limit.
