Vegetative Propagation Versus Seed Propagation of Transplant Aman Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A definite conclusion may not be drawn from the result of an experiment conducted in one year. But some valuable comments may be made. Vegetative propagation dld not produce higher grain yield compare to normal sexual propagation method, although in literature its superiority has much indication. Development of planting material in vegetative propagation is both time consuming. and costly. Hence in normal cultivation this method would not appeal to the people. But in special cases, like breeding work and other cases where there is limitation of planting seedstock this method may advantageously be used.

Objectives:

To exploit hybrid vigor through the method of vegetative propagation.

Methodology:

This study was made in the Agronomy Field Laboratory of the Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from April to December, 1973. A transplant am an rice was raised from seedling and tiller seedling with a view to compare the two crops in yield and other plant characters. Four varieties, Latisail, Naizersail IR 20 and IR 5 were used. There were two types of seedlings-seedlings and titter seedlings. The six variety-type of seedling combinations were fitted into a Randomized Block Design with 4 replications. The unit plot size was 1/360th acre. Tiller seedlings were developed in a period of 15 weeks from March 20. The experimental crop was planted in the main field on July 20 and harvested from November to December 9 of the same year.
