The Quality of Groundwater in Dinajpur District for Irrigation Use

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Water samples from 50 different deep tube wells in Dinajpur district were collected in order to study the chemical composition of water and to classify it according to its suitability for irrigation. The classification was based on the total salt concentration, sodium adsorption ratio, residual sodium carbonate, soluble sodium percentage and boron contents. In this investigation, most of the groundwater samples were found in low salinity group and were suitable for all crops. Ground water used for irrigating this district was found to be of excellent to good quality.

Objectives:

To ascertain chemical quality of deep tube well water used for irrigation in Dinajpur district.

Methodology:

Fifty groundwater samples one from each pumping well in Dinajpur district were collected in 2.5 gallon plastic containers. The mouth of each container was tightly sealed. The samples were taken from wells only after they had been pumped for. a few minutes. The samples were stored in a cool place and carried to the Bangladesh Agricultural University Laboratory for chemical analysis. With each sample a record of well location, date and operating condition of the well was furnished. The groundwater samples were analyzed for pH, electrical conductivity, soluble cations including calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium and iron; and the anions including carbonate, bicarbonate, chloride and sulphate according to the standard methods as indicated by the U. S. D. A. Hand Book No. 60 (1954). Concentration of ions are expressed in parts per million (ppmj and also ill equivalents per mi. JIion (eprn), Boron were used for categorization of irrigation water : a) Sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), b) Soluble sodium percentage (SSP), c) Residual sodium carbonate (RSC) and d) Salinity and sodium hazard class. The classification of groundwater was determined according to the U. S. Salinity Laboratory classification (l954) that based on sodium adsorption ratio and electrical conductivity. Groundwater quality classification for irrigation was also determined with the help of the table after Wilcox (1,955).
