Optimizing Fertilizer Rate for Mustard in Calcareous Dark Grey Floodplain Soil of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Field experiments were carried out in the Calcareous Dark Grey Floodplain Soil of Ishurdi in two consecutive rabi seasons of 1987-88 and 1988-89; to observe yield response, nutrient uptake and fertilizer economy of mustard (cv. SS-75) as influenced by NPKS fertilization. The highest seed yield and nutrient uptake were recorded with the treatment N ₁₂₀ P₆₀K₄₀ S₂₀. Yield responses of mustard were more pronounced with N and S fertilization- producing 184% and 89% increased seed yield over control due to application of N and S @ 120 and 40 kg/ha respectively. Economic evaluation of crop response data suggested that the treatment N_9O P₆₀ K₄₀ S₂₀ is optimum for seed yield and for obtaining a marginal rate of return as high as 1180%.

Objectives:

Methodology:

This two years study was conducted during the rabl seasons of 1987-88 and 1988-89 at the Regional Agricultural Research Staton of BARI, Ishurdi representing Calcareous Dark Grey Floodplain Soil.The experimenl was laid oul In RCBD with three replications. There were 10 different treatments composed of four levels of N (O, 50, 90 and 120 kg N/ha),three levels of P (0, 60 and 90 kg P₂0_5/ha) , two levels of K (0 and 40 kg k₂0/ha) and three levels of S(O, 20 and 40 Kg/ha). Urea, TSP, MP and gypsum were used as the sources of N, P, K and S respectively.

Achievement/Findings:

From the present study on Mustard (cv. SS-75), application of 90 kg N, 60 kg P₂0₅, 40 kg K₂0 and 20 kg S/ha has been found to be optimum for maximum economic yield. This may be extrapolated in similar land and soil conditions. Application of 40 kg S along with the above mentioned rates of NPK by the farmers could increase their gross margins and thus recommended for profitability
