Fertilizer Management Options for Groundnut Intercropping with Onion

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at Multi Location Test (MLT) site Hossainpur, Kishoregonj during rabi season of 2008 and 2009 to determine the optimum and economic dose of fertilizer for groundnut+ onion intercropping system. Three fertilizer options of groundnut intercropping with onion were arranged in randomized complete block design replicated six times. There were three treatments viz, T₁= 30-45-85-30-4-1 kgha^-1 of NPKSZnB (Sole groundnut dose), T₂= 120-40-75-20-5-1 kgha^-1 of NPKSZnB (Sole onion dose ) and T₃= 90-44-83-30-4 kgha^-1 of NPKSZn (Fertilizer RecommendationGuide-2005). Results showed that different fertilizer options significantly influenced kernelspod^-1 of groundnut in both years. The average nut yield (1.92 tha^-1), onion yield (3.25 tha^-1) and groundnut equivalent yield (3.22 tha^-1) were obtained from treatment T₂followed by treatment T_3.The average gross return (1,16,875 Tkha^-1) as well as benefit cost ratio (2.19) was found in T₂. Sole onion dose (120-40-75-20-5-1 kgha^-1 of NPKSZnB) was the most suitable and economic optimum for moderate yield of groundnut with additional higher yield of onion.

Objectives:

To determine the optimum and economic dose of fertilizer for groundnut + onion intercropping system.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Multi Location Test (MLT) site Hossainpur, Kishoregonj (AEZ-9) during rabi season of two consecutive years of 2008 and 2009. The soil was sandy loam with pH 6.7, organic carbon 0.94%, total N 0.091%, available P 6.24 µgg^-1, and exchangeable K 0.15 meq100^-1g soil, respectively. During the growing period, monthly maximum temperature ranged from 20.95^oC to 30.35^oC and 21.34^oC to 32.28^oC in 2007-08 and 2008-09, respectively. Monthly maximum temperature ranged from 14.95^oC to 25.83^oC and 15.34^oC to 25.28^oC in 2007-08 and 2008-09, respectively.

The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with six replications. The unit plot size was 5.0 m x 4.0 m. There was three treatments viz. T₁= 30-45-85-30-4-1 kgha^-1 of NPKSZnB (Sole groundnut dose), T₂= 120-40-75-20-5-1 kgha^-1 of NPKSZnB (Sole onion dose) and T₃= 90-44-83-30-4 kgha^-1 of NPKSZn (Fertilizer Recommendation Guide-2005). N, P, K, S, Zn and B were applied from Urea, Triple Super Phosphate, Muriate of Potash, Gypsum and Alpha boric, respectively. The spacing for groundnut intercropping with onion was maintaining at 40 cm x 10 cm and in between two rows of groundnut two rows of onion was planted maintaining 20 cm x 05 cm spacing. All fertilizers were incorporated as basal except 2/3^rd of N fertilizer which was applied as top dressing in intercropping crops at 20 and 40 days after emergence (DAE) of groundnut. BARI badam-6 and onion variety Taherpuri were used as test crops. The seeds of groundnut and seedlings of onion were sown on 01 and 09 January 2008 in first year and 01 January and 13 January, 2009 in second year, respectively. Two irrigations were applied by flood system at 20 and 40 DAE in first year and one irrigation was applied at 25 days after emergence in second year. Weeding and other intercultural operations were done as per requirement. Groundnut was harvested on 15 May 2008 in first year and 09 May 2009 in second year, respectively. Data of yield components were collected from 10 plants selected at random in each plot and yield was recorded plot wise. The collected data were analyzed statistically. Economic analysis was done on the basis of prevailing market price of input and output.

Achievement/Findings:

The overall results suggest that the treatment T₂ = 120-40-75-20-5-1 kgha^-1 of NPKSZnB (sole onion dose) may be more profitable than other two treatments. Considering yield and benefit cost ratio treatment T_2,therefore, may be recommended for groundnut + onion intercropping system.
