Effect of Levels of Npk Fertilizers and Algal Inoculation on Two Cultivars of Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The variety Nigershail showed better performance in respect of plant height. panicle length, ear bearing tillers. fertile grains per panicle. grain and straw yield over the variety IR-20. In respect of NPK fertilizers, higher rates of nitrogen of 112-134 kg/ha with 67.90 kg/ha of phosphate and 45 kg/ha of potassium increased grain yield significantly; but lower N rate with similar phosphate and potash supply reduced the yield. The green algae grown in rice field did not increase yield rather, there Was an increasing trend of grain yield in absence of algal growth in any condition.

Objectives:

1.To evaluate the effect of different NPK levels in the presence and absence of algae in rice culture in Bangladesh

2.To evaluate the effect of algae on the yield and yield components of local and exotic rice varieties.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Agricultural University Farm. Mymensingh (old Brahmaputra Flood Plain Soil during July to December, 1972. The soil was silty loam in texture with pH value 6.5, total Nitrogen 0.98% and available nitrogen 2.6 mgl 100 g soil. The treamtents were (A) Varietes ; IR-20 (vI); Nigershail (v 2); (B) Fertilizers : N-P- K in kg/ha-I) 0-0-0 (F1) 67-112-45, (F2) 112-90-45 (Fa) 134-67-45 (F4,'. C. Algal culture; (i) Control (AI) (ii) Natural growth of algae (A2) and (iii) Artificial culture of algae (As). The lend WbS ploughs d ar d cress ploughed by power tiller 6 times followed by final laddering, The experiment was laid out in split plot design keeping the varieties in the main plots and algal culture and fertilizer treatment combination in the subplots at random. The rice field was kept in flooded condition to about 5.6 cm water. In artificial algal culture treatment, green algae was collected from otber fields and the experimental plots were inoculated ( 0.9.1.0 kg/plots). The fertilizers were applied as urea, triple superphosphate and muriate of potash with phosphorus and potash fertilizers as basal and nitrogenous fertilizer in 2 equal splits The unit plot size was 670.6 em X 304.8 em, The seedlings were trans- planted on the 8th August. 1972. Seed- ling age was 26 days and spacing were 25 em l8i 20 em, and 2 seedlings were planted per hill. Two weedings were done with out disturbing the algal growth. Ten sample plants were selected at random and some data were recorded from the sample plant. Grain and straw yields were recorded on sun-dry basis after harvesting the plants. The data were analyzed statistically and the mean values were adjudged by Duncan's New Multiple Range Test,
