Life History of Lilioceris Impressa and Its Damage on 'pesta Alu' (dioscorea Bulbifera)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The nature of damage, developmental stages, oviposition site, fecundity and egg hatchability of Lilioceris impressa were observed on 'pesta alu' (Dioscorea bulbifera). The incubation period ranged from 4 to 6 days with an average of 4.5 days. Durations of different larval in- stars averaged 3.4, 2.9, 2.7 and 1.8 days respectively. Pupal period varied from 11 to 17 days. The average number of eggs laid per female was 97 and egg hatchability averaged 92 percent. Mean adult longevity of males was 25.5 days and that of females was 29.0 days. The larvae fed on the leaves by making circular/semicircular holes. They also fed on the tips of the shoots resulting in a bunchytip of the plant. with the formation of the aerial bulbils, the larvae attacked the bulbils and made them useless. The adults also fed on the leaves and bulbils.

Objectives:

To investigate the nature of damage and Iife history of the Insect Lilioceris impressa

Methodology:

The study was carried out in the laboratory of the Entomology Division, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Dhaka during July-September 1982 with an average room temperature of 30.5? Adult beetles were collected from field ar.d held in petri dishes in pairs. They were supplied with fresh tender leaves for feeding. Eggs were collected and kept in petridish for hatchig. The newly hatched larvae were isolated in petridishes and were provided with fresh tender leaves which were renewed twice (morning and afternoon) daily. The time and number of larval moulting were recorded until pupation. As soon as the Iarvae stopped feeding they were isolated in petridish containing a layer of lo soil to facilitate pupation. Pupae were collected and isolated in small plastic poll for adults emergence. The pupal period was recorded. The newly emerged adalb were sexed and isolated in pairs in petridishes along with food for oviposition. The fecundity, hatchability, and adult longevity of the insect were noted. Notes were also taken on the nature of damage made by the larvae and adults. Oviposition sites of the pest were located in the fields.
