Genotype X Season Interaction Shown by Some Agronomic Traits in Mulberry

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An Investigation of variety X season interaction for leaf yield and other agronomic traits of five varieties of mulberry was carried out to evaluate them with respect to their response to and stability in different environments. Genotypes interacted with the environments for all the characters studied. The performance of individual genotypes were linear functions of the environmental values to which they collectively subscribe for all the characters though there was a significant non linear component for most of them. Genotypes C- 776 and S-799 were found suitable for favourable environments, whereas V -5 performed better in poor environments. S-1 with mean yield not much less than the grand mean, average response and low 52 d values was suitable for all environments.

Objectives:

To study quantitatively the genotype X season interaction shown by some agronomic traits of this crop and identify genotypes with potential to adapt to different environments.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted with five mulberry varieties ego C-776, S-1, S-799, V-S and V-5. These varieties constituted the genotypes of the study. The whole experimental field was divided into six replications. Five genotypes were randomly distributed in each replication. The size of each plot within are location was 4.57 X 3.65m. The distance between the plots within replications and that between replications was 2.43m. Disease free cuttings of 15 cm length and 9 mm diameter were planted at a spacing of 45.00 X 2.54cm in October, 1979. Gap filling was done with saplings of same age during June, 1980. The first prunning of the saplings at the ground level was done at the end of December, 1980. Cultural operations like, manure; digging, weeding and irrigation were carried out as and when necessary. Urea. triple super phosphate and muriate of potash were applied at the rate of 300 150 kg and 75 kg/ha respectively as recommended for commercial cultivation. Harvesting of leaves was done in March, June, September and December of 1980 and 1981. There were thus eight different environments which were measured quantitatively. Data on plant height, branch number/plant and leaf number/plant were taken before each harvest from fifteen plants/plot was recorded after each harvest.
